ACADEMIC/ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIPS

Students may receive one scholarship from the Academic/Achievement section.

Academic Scholarship

Academic scholarships are awarded to full-time, degree seeking students attending main campus. Academic scholarships are designed to recognize and reward students for previous academic achievement. Generous scholarship awards are presented based on ACT/SAT scores, consideration can also be given to grade-point averages and class rank. Consideration for academic scholarships begins with an ACT composite score of 24 or above. Scholarship dollar amounts range from $3300 to $9000. Renewable: academic scholarships are renewable at the end of an academic year based on an earned grade point average of 3.0 for levels C, D, and E and 3.25 for Levels A and B.

National Merit Scholarship Program

HLG offers full-time students a scholarship as National Merit Scholars and finalists. The award for scholars is 100% tuition, general fees, and room and board charges. The students are ineligible for any other HLG institutional aid; however, they may retain any outside aid they can secure. National Merit Scholarship finalists are eligible for an award of 50% of tuition and room and board charges. A minimum CGPA of 3.25 is required.

Achievement Scholarship

Achievement scholarships are considered for students not receiving an academic scholarship. Achievement scholarships are based on ACT/SAT score results and grade point averages earned previous to enrollment at HLG. Scholarship dollar amounts range from $1300 to $3600. Renewable: Achievement scholarships are renewable based on maintaining a 2.5 grade point average at the end of an academic year.

Transfer Scholarship

Students who transfer directly to HLG with a CGPA of 3.0 or higher after one year of full-time enrollment at another institution are awarded a transfer scholarship amounting to 20% of the annual cost of tuition. Residential students may also deduct 20% from the cost of room and board. Renewable: Based on full-time enrollment and maintaining a minimum CGPA of 2.5.

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship

Students transferring into HLG with membership in Phi Theta Kappa are eligible to receive a scholarship. Students must enroll full-time and maintain a CGPA of 3.0.

ENHANCEMENT SCHOLARSHIPS

Full-time students who qualify may add up to two of the following scholarships to the Academic/Achievement scholarships. Performance and Athletic scholarships are awarded and renewed by audition and a 2.0 CGPA at the end of an academic year.

Athletic

Athletic scholarships are awarded by the Athletic Department by tryout and are renewable by performance and a 2.0 CGPA at the end of an academic year. Amounts vary.

• Southern Baptist Youth Programs: $200-$500 annually (based on the level attained within the organization). Contact the Admissions Office for details.
• Minister’s/Missionary’s Dependant: $630 annually
• Awe Star Scholarship: $840 annually to those who have received Awe Star training and completed the 30-day mission experience through Awe Star.
• Awana Citation Scholarship: $500 annually (completion of Awana Citation required)

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS

These scholarships are made possible by generous gifts from donors and are in addition to the academic and enhancement awards. The deadline to apply for any of them is February 1. SPECIAL SCHOLARSHIPS

Missouri Teacher Education Scholarship

This is a one-time, non-renewable, $2,000 scholarship with half being provided by the state of Missouri and half by HLG. The HLG award is in addition to any other scholarships received through Hannibal-LaGrange. To qualify, students must rank in the top 15% of their class or score in the top 15% on a college entrance examination. Recipients must agree to teach in a Missouri public school for five years after certification. Full-time enrollment is required. Missouri Minority Teaching Scholarship

A $2,000 scholarship is provided by the state of Missouri and $1,000 by HLG. Missouri African, Asian, Hispanic, or Native American high school seniors, college students, or returning adults (without degree) ranking in the top 25% of their high school class and scoring at or above the 75th percentile on the ACT or SAT and majoring in education are eligible. This award is also available to individuals with both 30 college hours and a 3.0 CGPA, or individuals with a baccalaureate degree returning to an approved math or science education program. This award has a February 15 application deadline.

Missouri Baptist Employee Concession

Students enrolling for the first time whose parents are full-time employees of the Missouri Baptist Convention are eligible for a 50% tuition-only concession. The employee must have completed three years of full-time employment. Recipients are ineligible for any other HLG aid. If students can obtain scholarships greater than 50% through the main scholarship program, they can choose not to accept the concession. Employees of the Missouri Baptist Building, the Baptist Home (Ironton, Chillicothe, and Ozark), and the Missouri Baptist Children’s Home qualify for the concession.

MISSOURI AID PROGRAMS

Access Missouri Program

This award is available to Missouri residents attending a participating Missouri college or university. Recipients must be enrolled full-time and have their FAFSA submitted by April 1. Recipients of this award are determined by the state of Missouri. This award can be received for up to 10 semesters and a 2.5 CGPA must be maintained.

Missouri Higher Education Academic Scholarship (Bright Flight)

This is a renewable, $2000 per-year scholarship available to Missouri residents attending a participating Missouri college or university as a first-time student the academic year immediately following their senior year of high school. To qualify, a student must be enrolled full-time and have a composite ACT or SAT score in the top 3% of all Missouri residents. This award can be received for up to 10 semesters and a 2.5 CGPA must be maintained.

FEDERAL FINANCIAL AID PROGRAMS

Federal financial aid is non-institutional financial assistance based on family need which is determined by information reported on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Once HLG receives the results of this analysis, the Financial Aid Office will try to meet your educational costs with various aid programs. It is a federal regulation that students complete student loan entrance counseling prior to obtaining a Federal Stafford student loan. The federal government further requires that students complete student loan exit counseling prior to graduating or ceasing to be enrolled at least half-time.

Federal Pell Grants

A federally funded grant program with award amounts ranging from $890 - $4,731. Eligibility is determined on the basis of financial need as determined by the FAFSA.

Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (SEOG)

These federally funded grants are awarded to students with exceptional financial need. Students who have been accepted for admission are given priority. The award amount at HLG is $1000.

Academic Competitiveness Grant

To be eligible for the ACG Grant a student must be a United States citizen, a Pell Grant recipient, a full-time student, and have completed a rigorous high school curriculum. First year students must not have been previously enrolled in an undergraduate program. Second year students must have at least a 3.0 GPA at the end of the first year. The award amount is $750 for 1st year students and $1300 for second year students.

National Science and Math Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grant

This grant is for students focusing in certain areas of study including physical, life, or computer sciences, engineering, technology, mathematics, or critical foreign languages. To be eligible a student must be a U.S. citizen, a Pell Grant recipient, and a full-time baccalaureate-degree seeking 3rd or 4th year student. A minimum annual 3.0 CGPA in eligible major courses must be maintained for renewal. The SMART Grant award amount is $4000 per 3rd and 4th year.

Federal Work Study

This program provides part-time, on campus employment for students with established financial need. Funds are limited and awarded on a first-come, first-awarded basis. An application is required. Click here to download application

LOANS

Federal Stafford Loans

All students who file a FAFSA will be considered for a Stafford Loan. Depending upon a student’s demonstrated financial need, the Stafford Loan may be subsidized (government pays the interest while the student is enrolled at least half-time) or unsubsidized (interest begins to accrue on receipt of the loan). Interest rates are fixed at 6% for subsidized loans and 6.8% for unsubsidized loans. The annual amounts are $3,500 for freshmen, $4,500 for sophomores, and $5,500 for juniors and seniors. Repayment begins six months after the student ceases to be enrolled at least half-time. Independent students can borrow the same loan limits plus an additional $4000 for freshmen and sophomores and $5,500 for juniors and seniors.

Perkins Loans

Loans are available for up to $4,000 per year with no interest charged while the students remains in school at least half-time. Repayment begins nine months after leaving school. Eligibility is determined on the basis of financial need. Interest rates are fixed at 5%.

PLUS Program

Parents may borrow up to the total cost of attendance per year for each of their dependent undergraduate students. Past credit history is used to determine eligibility. Repayment begins within sixty days after the final loan disbursements; there is no grace period for this loan. Interest rates are fixed at 8.5%. Contact the Financial Aid Office for more details. HLG requires the FAFSA be submitted prior to processing a PLUS loan.

Additional Financial Aid Documents / How to get your loan

The Financial Aid Office will mail your financial aid award letter after we receive your Student Aid Report (SAR) from the Department of Education. The Student Aid Report is available after the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) has been processed. The award letter will list all of the financial aid awards that you are eligible to receive. These awards may include scholarships, grants, work programs, and/or loans, and are subject to change if your financial aid eligibility changes.

Gamm Nursing Loan

This fund provides loans to HLG nursing students. Loans are not to exceed the cost of tuition, books, and room and board. Interest at a rate of 7% accrues on the unpaid balance after termination of studies at HLG. Apply through the HLG Financial Aid Office.

Pearl Lowrie Student Loan

Established in memory of Pearl Lowrie, this fund provides loans to HLG students. First-year students may borrow up to $3,500 per year; second-year students, up to $4,500; and third-year students, up to $5,500. The maximum available per student is $22,625. Funds have a fixed rate of 5%. Payments on the interest begin six months after student drops below half-time enrollment. This fund is administered through a trust fund held at Hannibal National Bank, Hannibal, Missouri. Half-time enrollment is required for this loan. SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL BENEFITS

Veterans, dependents of deceased or disabled veterans, physically handicapped students, or students with a deceased parent may be eligible for special educational benefits. Contact the Veterans, Social Security, or Vocational Rehabilitation office nearest you.

Applying for Financial Aid

How to apply for Hannibal-LaGrange College Scholarship Programs

Upon applying for admission to the college, students are automatically considered for HLG scholarships. See the Academic/Achievement Scholarships section for descriptions of these awards.

Submitting the FAFSA

Students seeking federal financial aid should complete the Free Application for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA) after January 1 on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The HLG federal school code is 009089 and priority submission date is July 1 for fall admission and November 1 for spring admission for traditional students. For Missouri student’s, the FAFSA must be submitted by April 1 for state grants.

After your FAFSA has been submitted you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) in the mail or by e-mail within a few weeks. You will need to review your information for accuracy. If any changes need to be made you can make these. If you list Hannibal-LaGrange College’s Title IV School code (009089), your FAFSA information will be received by our Financial Aid Office. This information allows us to determine your financial aid and send you an award letter. Your award letter will be mailed to the address given on your FAFSA. This letter will consist of HLG scholarships, grants, loans and work study. Your Admissions Office Representative will contact you to discuss your award letter to see if you have any questions.

Selected for Verification

Each year the Department of Education requires review on at least 30% of all FAFSA applications. Students will be notified that they have been selected for verification on their SAR as well as a verification letter sent by HLG’s Financial Aid Office. This verification letter will state what items are needed for verification. Please see list below. It is encouraged to submit all paperwork at the same time. Financial Aid awards will not be finalized until the HLG Financial Aid Office has completed the student’s verification. If your FAFSA information has been selected for verification, please print, complete, sign and return the following documents to the Hannibal-LaGrange College Financial Aid Office:

• Student’s 2007 Federal Income Tax Return Signed by student (include spouse’s return, if married)
• Parent(s)’ 2007 Federal Income Tax Return Signed (if student is dependent by government definition for aid purposes)
