An open house reception to honor retiring Hannibal-LaGrange University president Dr. Woodrow Burt is planned for Thursday, April 26, from 3:00 to 6:00 pm in the Roland Fine Arts Center on the campus of HLGU.

Dr. Burt has served Hannibal-LaGrange for over three decades and will retire in August of this year. On September 8, 2011, when Dr. Burt announced his retirement to the Board of Trustees and HLGU personnel, he said, "God has blessed me with the privilege of serving at Hannibal-LaGrange for 32 years. As I begin my 33rd year with HLGU, and my 18th year as president, I want to thank you for the opportunity you've entrusted to me over these years." During his tenure with HLGU, he has held a variety of positions including faculty member, admissions director, dean of students, registrar, academic dean, chief development officer, executive vice president, and president.

The retirement reception will include cookies and punch, fellowship, and feature some special recognitions and reminiscing.

A memory book will be presented during the event as well. If you would like to submit photos and/or a note of thanks and/or affirmation to Dr. Burt, please print your message on an 8.5 x 11 (unfolded) sheet of paper. Personal, business, church, or school letterhead is appropriate for inclusion in the memory book. Your letter of affirmation and remembrance should be sent to Lauren Youse, HLGU Director of Alumni, 2800 Palmyra Road, Hannibal, MO 63401 or emailed to

This event is free and open to the public.

Helpful Hints from HLGU Career Services
PROVERB 6:6 – Consider the Ant!

One summer, I discovered an invasion of ants outside the front entrance of our home. My husband and I tried every imaginable method to exterminate the pests. We purchased various commercial products and experimented with homemade concoctions. In spite of our efforts, the ants continued their steady march. I was simply amazed and taken back by their persistence. It seemed like the ants were not fazed by any attempt to stop them.

What can the employed, unemployed and underemployed learn from ants? Let me share a few brief insights I gained from my encounter with the little insects:

Problem-solve, and

Prosper. They sought, found, and returned with the "prize."

I think we can learn a lot from these tiny bugs. I know I did!
