The Hannibal-Lagrange University men’s soccer team made it all the way to the quarterfinal round of the 54th annual NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship before their season was unfortunately ended.
The Trojans fell 3-2 to the Belhaven University Blazers Wednesday, November 28. The Blazers went on to win the 2012 Championship on December 1st.
“Our season didn’t start as well as we expected,” said Sergi Beltrol, Assistant Coach. At the beginning of October we had a record of 5-4, having the same amount of losses that we had the previous year in the entire regular season. But then the team came together and with hard work and engagement from every single part of the team we managed to have 11 wins in a row and make it to the elite eight.”
“The season was exciting and enjoyable and I was blessed to be a part of it,” said Head Coach David Erskine. “The team showed resilience after early season disappointing loses by winning the AMC Regular Season and Conference Tournament titles as well as upsetting the #13 and #4 seeded teams at the National Tournament.”
Junior Felipe Silva of Belo Horizante, Brazil gained another assist during the game to improve his season points total to 51. Silva now sits with 109 career points, the second all-time for Hannibal-Lagrange University.
“I am very proud of this team and of what they have accomplished,” said Beltrol. “It has been a great experience to be able to coach them along with Coach Erskine, and I would like to wish the best for those who played their last season with us."
The quarterfinal loss ended the Trojans’ season at 16-5 and marks the farthest Hannibal-LaGrange University has ever advanced in the NAIA Tournament.
