HLGU Announces Campaign for New Science, Nursing, and Allied Health Building

Following the approval from its board of trustees on Friday, October 18, 2013, Hannibal-LaGrange University is pleased to announce the start of a new campaign that will raise funds to build a new Science, Nursing and Allied Health facility.
After the storm in May, it was determined that HLGU's T.M. Mathews Science Building had been damaged beyond repair. HLGU students are attending classes in modular facilities and off-campus classrooms. "The Science, Nursing & Allied Health Building is badly needed for us to grow as a University. I want to thank our mighty God for adversity such as 'storms' to get the ball rolling," stated Dr. Gerald R. Burkett, Department of Biology Chair.
"The biology department has been struggling with just one teaching lab for years. The new Science, Nursing and Allied Health Building will allow the program to grow with more space and updated laboratory facilities for classes and research. Having more than one laboratory will allow students to have better flexibility when deciding on their class schedules. The old lab's ventilation system was in desperate need of updating. I look forward to having a lab that is modern, well ventilated, and has no rust," stated Dr. David Ziegler, Department of Chemistry Chair. "A new building will expand the classroom learning environment with more space and better lighting. Having group study areas where students can work on projects together will definitely be appreciated. All in all, we are looking forward to creating a great learning environment for our students."
In early December, HLGU will be submitting an application for a Mabee grant in the amount of $446,000. This grant will assist in paying for a portion of the new 40,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility. Plans are for the facility to be built on the southeast side of Highway168 between Roland Fine Arts Center and Crouch Hall. In order to receive the grant the University needs to raise cash funds in the amount of $753,000 before December 1.
The Mabee Foundation is a non-profit corporation formed in 1948 by Mr. John E. Mabee and his wife, Lottie E. Mabee. The purpose of the Mabee Foundation is to aid charitable organizations toward the completion of a campaign.
"Plans are underway to design and receive input from the faculty and staff. It will be critically important to begin raising funds, along with insurance proceeds, to fund the project," stated Dr. Anthony W. Allen, HLGU President. Plans are to complete the facility by August 2014. Amenities of the new handicapped-accessible facility include science, math, and nursing classrooms, a computer lab, private and group study rooms, a student lounge/ common area, and science lab rooms.
