HLGU Freshmen Serve the Community

by Rebecca Sneed

One of Hannibal-LaGrange University’s core values is to be service oriented. Each semester, the University’s first-time freshman students embark on demonstrating that value and the school’s motto, “Knowledge for Service,” by completing a class-led service project. Since February 17 is National Random Acts of Kindness Day, freshman seminar students plan to launch a thirty day campaign, called “Do RAK!” (Random Acts of Kindness).

On February 17, the students will provide “Do RAK!” wristbands to individuals who pledge to do daily acts of kindness from February 17 to March 17. They will also distribute intervention materials, kindness ideas, and “RAK Attack!” cards. The cards are designed to be left for the unsuspecting kindness recipient to discover along with the act of kindness they received.

The Do RAK campaign is open to anyone who wants to participate. Participants are free to select their own kindness act and recipient. They are also encouraged to record and post their RAK Attacks on Facebook.

To receive the packet and accompanying Do RAK wristband, a minimum donation of one dollar or any paper products, such as towels, plates, toilet paper, etc. is encouraged. Each wristband is stamped with “Do RAK!” and “Ephesians 4:32” which reads “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” The proceeds from the packets will go toward completing the freshman seminar service project and partnership with a community agency to address a local need.
