HLGU expands computer sciences program

The HLGU Computer Information Systems Department is now the HLGU Computer Sciences Department and has expanded its degree offerings to include four new emphases.

Dr. Michelle Todd, the department chair and professor of information technology, said “Many of the things we were already teaching align well in the new degree.”

The four emphases are cybersecurity, information technology, computer information systems, and computer science. Todd shares what can be expected in each emphasis.

“Cybersecurity is the safety, protecting the network, descending of the network. It has a lot of networking, and students that want to pursue this need to understand the hardware and how the packages work in the network and trying to eliminate cybercrimes,” she said.

“Information technology is a lot of computer classes and the students in this will be the ones who fix a lot of issues. It’s one emphasis with which people are most familiar.”

“Computer information services will be a set of business classes. It is for those headed toward management and work with people.”

“Computer Science involves programming and is heavy on math.”

Nineteen students are in the program and many are showing interest in the cybersecurity emphasis.

“Students can identify one emphasis and they are not locked in the first year,” Todd said. “They can switch, but by the time they are sophomores they need to know which direction on which to focus.”

Todd said the students will work on all types of computers and systems.

“We prepare for them to work for enterprise to the best of our ability,” Todd said.
