Accreditation

Higher Learning Commission accreditation provides assurance that a university is fulfilling its mission and provides a quality education. Accreditation is also necessary for the institution to receive federal funding, including student financial aid. Hannibal-LaGrange University remains fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

This status does not affect students’ grades, degrees, or eligibility for any state or federal programs. HLGU remains fully accredited. While every university sets its own standards for admissions and the acceptance of credits, a status of accredited (probation) does not normally affect these standards. Students pursuing a higher degree should contact the college or university they plan to attend so that they are knowledgeable about the admission policies for that college or university

The HLC took this action because it determined that the institution is out of compliance with 3 of the 47 HLC requirements. All of these were related to the financial condition and the financial oversight of the University. While this action is reflective of the past, the period of probation provides the institution a reasonable timeframe to demonstrate that our changes have resulted in meeting the criterion.

Probation is a tool the Higher Learning Commission uses to hold institutions accountable, encourage improvement and ensure quality. We have implemented various strategies to right-size our institution including replacing various administrators and trustees, implementing a curricular re-write, creating a balanced and scalable budget, employing new admissions and scholarship tactics and exploring new funding sources. We are confident that the plans we have made will be successful in strengthening our institution.  Probation can be a very positive event in the life of an institution. Hannibal-LaGrange remains fully accredited.
