Hannibal, MO – The Hannibal-LaGrange University Athletic Department has recently announced the hiring of Tracy Jex for the position of head cross country and track & field coach. Jex will come to HLGU from Longmont, CO.
Jex’s most recent coaching position was at Mead High School in Longmont, CO where he served as the head cross country and track & field coach. During his one year at Mead High, Jex coached three runners to the Colorado state track meet and one runner to an all-state finish in the 100 meter dash.
Before coaching at Mead High, Jex was an assistant cross country coach and eventually the head cross country and track & field coach at Colorado Christian University. As an assistant, Jex helped with recruiting, designing practice workouts and directing practice in the absence of the head coach. He was promoted to the head coaching position after a year’s service as an assistant. Jex spent 2007-2009 as the head coach and was able to coach the first All-American in Colorado Christian history.
Jex’s first coaching experience came in 2002 as the head cross country coach and assistant track & field coach at Longmont High School. While at Longmont High, he was able to coach two all-state cross country runners, the men’s 2003 team to a 10th place state finish and the women’s team to a ninth (2002) and 14th (2003) place finish at the state cross country meet. As an assistant track & field coach, Jex was in charge of the distance runners and helped the team to four consecutive state finishes. The team’s best finish came in 2006 after the women’s team finished second and the men’s team took third at the 4A Colorado State Track & Field Championships. In 2005, Jex was recognized as the Colorado High School Coaches Association Girls Assistant Track Coach of the Year after helping the women’s team to a second place finish at state.
As a student athlete at Colorado Christian University, Jex broke the school record in the 10 kilometer run with a time of 33:11. He was also the first top-20 conference runner in school history and the first runner in school history to have consecutive top-five finishes in the conference meet.
While attending Longmont High, Jex was a four year letter winner in cross country and track & field. He was also a captain on the cross country team for two years and competed at the Colorado state track meet in the two mile run. Jex was also able to participate in the 1996 Junior Olympics. He was crowned champion in both the 2000 meter steeplechase and 5000 meter run while at the Region X meet. He later competed in the National Junior Olympics where he finished the 2000 meter steeplechase in 14th place and the 5000 meter run in 19th place.
Jex earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Colorado Christian University in 2003 and his Master of Arts degree in Human Performance and Physical Education from Adams State College in 2009. He and his wife ... will move to Hannibal this summer with their two children.
