Hannibal, MO - On Friday, September 9, 2011, Hannibal-LaGrange University honored two former presidents, Dr. Larry L. Lewis and Dr. Paul E. Brown, by naming Memorial Hall in their honor. The ceremony was held at 10:00 a.m. at Memorial Hall entrance.
“This is an opportunity to honor two men who have been instrumental in the success and growth of Hannibal-LaGrange,” said Dr. Woodrow Burt, HLGU President. “They both provided outstanding leadership in crucial times in the life of HLGU.”
Dr. Larry L. Lewis held the position of president of HLG from September 1981 until May 1987. He then went on to be president of what was then called the Home Mission Board, now the North American Mission Board, of the Southern Baptist Convention.
“One of Larry Lewis’ key achievements during his presidency was making the relationship between HLG and the surrounding community stronger than it had been in previous history of the school. He won friends, financial support, and renewed respect for this institution,” said Dr. Burt.
Dr. Paul E. Brown followed Dr. Lewis as the president of Hannibal-LaGrange. He was named president in 1987 and served in that capacity until 1994 when he retired.
“Paul Brown will always be remembered for his outstanding leadership at HLG after a devastating fire destroyed the original administration building,” said Dr. Burt.
Thankful for the beautiful day, the morning’s ceremony was held just outside the doors of Memorial Hall. Both Dr. Lewis and Dr. Brown thanked their families for being at the event with them and shared some special memories of their service to HLG. Following their remarks both men unveiled their respective signs for Lewis Hall and Brown Hall. The ceremony came to a close with a prayer of dedication offered by Terry Buster, HLGU Board of Trustees chairman and a special vocal tribute sung by Dr. Brown’s son, Dan.
Approximately 125 friends, family members, students, faculty, HLGU Trustees, Chamber Ambassadors, and staff attended the event and were invited into the lobby of the hall where Dr. Lewis and Dr. Brown unveiled plaques that had been made in their honor. In addition, those in attendance were invited to write letters to the men that would be added to memory books that were also presented to Dr. Lewis and Dr. Brown.
The event ended with lunch being served to the Lewis and Brown families and friends in the Page dining room of HLGU.
