ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Hannibal-LaGrange Lady Trojan soccer team defeated Harris-Stowe 3-1 Thursday evening for its second straight conference win.
The Lady Trojans outshot the Hornets 26-6 and put 14 of the 26 shots on goal. Keeper Whitney Voepel saw little activity on her half of the field until late in the second half. She limited the Lady Hornets to one goal and came away with four saves on the night.
“We’ve really been working on defending as a team and, besides one break down in the final 10 minutes, I feel like we showed really good progress with that today,” commented Coach Jason Nichols. Our team defense is what created our chances to score.”
The Lady Trojans scored its first goal late in the first half as Raelene Blanton caught a deflection off the Harris-Stowe keeper and easily put it in the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Fernanda Miaci took over in the second half, scoring twice for HLGU. Her first goal came in the 51st minute after Katelyn Fray found Miaci deep in the box on a set play. Miaci’s second goal was a blast from 35 yards out that sailed past the keeper to give the Lady Trojans a 3-0 lead.
The 3-1 win keeps the Lady Trojans perfect in conference play as it now prepares for non-conference foe Lindenwood University – Belleville. The Trojans and Lynx will square off Saturday at 3:00 p.m. on Blackwell Field.
