HANNIBAL, Mo. - Hannibal-LaGrange University Wrestling is pleased to announce Matt Dunbar as the assistant wrestling coach beginning the 2011-12 season. Coach Dunbar served as a volunteer assistant during the 2010-11 season and is making the transition to be a more viable part of the paid coaching staff.
Dunbar is 2006 Hannibal High School graduate. While wrestling for the Hannibal High Pirates, Coach Dunbar compiled an impressive 140-20 career record and was also a four time state place winner with two Missouri State Tournament finals appearances. Coach Dunbar set an all time Hannibal High record for earning the most team points (786) and most three point near falls (141). Dunbar started his college wrestling career at Lindenwood University before transferring to Hannibal-LaGrange. During his time at HLGU, Dunbar married his wife Brittney and has made the transition from wrestler to coach.
“Coach Dunbar brings a solid background in wrestling and work ethic that will rub off on the wrestlers he helps coach,” commented Coach Scott Hawes. Not only has Dunbar had success wrestling, but he has received several academic honors as well. As I considered Matt as my assistant coach, I took into consideration what type of influence he would have on the HLGU wrestlers. He is the type of example on and off the mat that I want to put in front of our wrestlers.”
HLGU is a Division I NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) school and a member of the American Midwest Conference.
