HANNIBAL, Mo. – The Hannibal-LaGrange Men’s Soccer team shutout 15th ranked Columbia College Thursday afternoon in a 2-0 conference victory. The win pushes HLGU into a first place tie with William Woods in the American Midwest Conference standings.
The Trojans’ first goal came late into the first half as Alex Porras found Thiago Pereira inside the box. Pereira blasted a shot past Cougar goalkeeper Matt McKenna to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead in the 41st minute.
HLGU then went up 2-0 in the 74th minute after Sergi Beltrol’s shot deflected off the crossbar to teammate Luis Rincon. Rincon then found Ty Williams deep inside the box for an easy goal that put the game out of reach for the Cougars.
The Trojans outshot the Cougars 13-9 and limited Columbia to only two shots on goal en route to its fifth shutout of the season.
With the win, the Trojans improve its overall record to 8-2 and will look to carry its momentum over into Saturday’s home contest against conference foe Harris-Stowe. Saturday’s game is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. on Blackwell Field.
HLGU is a Division I NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) school and a member of the American Midwest Conference.
