HANNIBAL, Mo. – The Lady Trojans soccer team defeated Harris-Stowe Saturday to improve its conference record to 3-2. The victory marks the second time the ladies have defeated Harris-Stowe this season with a 3-1 win back in mid-September.
The Lady Trojans struck early as Raelene Blanton fed Fernanda Miaci a perfect ball down the middle of the pitch. Miaci used her speed to break past the defenders and beat goalkeeper Heather Wors on the far post. The goal gave HLGU the 1-0 lead in the eighth minute and moved Miaci past the career goals record (32) set by Jodie Nelson in 2001.
“When I scored, I got really excited and the only thing I thought of was how I wanted my family to be here to watch me,” commented the Brazilian native Miaci. “I’m really happy about breaking the record.”
Miaci struck once more before the end of the first half. In the 31st minute, Brittany Johnson found Miaci in the middle of the field. Miaci once again sped past Harris-Stowe defenders and found the back of the net for her second goal of the day.
The ladies went up 3-0 in the 71st minute after Hailey Johnson found Melissa Ramirez deep in the box. Ramirez blasted a shot past Wors for her first goal of the season.
HLGU tallied another goal on just three minutes later. Miaci’s free kick, from 20 yards out, found its way over the wall set by the Lady Hornets and into the back of the net. The goal put the Lady Trojans up 4-0 and gave Miaci her third goal of the day.
Lady Trojan goalkeeper Whitney Voepel earned her second shutout of the season as Hannibal-LaGrange outshot the Lady Hornets 25-7 and limited Harris-Stowe to only three shots on goal.
The win improves the Lady Trojans record to 3-7 and gives HLGU some momentum going into its conference road game on Tuesday against William Woods. The ladies will be home again on October 8 for a homecoming contest against Benedictine University at Springfield at 3:30 p.m.
HLGU is a Division I NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) school and a member of the American Midwest Conference.
