FULTON, Mo. – The No. 16 Trojans backed up its new ranking Tuesday night with a 3-0 win over American Midwest Conference foe William Woods. The win left the Trojans as the only AMC team without a conference loss and solidified HLGU’s top conference standing.
The Trojans barely outshot the Owls 19-16 but dominated the shots-on-goal with 11 compared to Williams Woods’ four. The shutout marks the seventh of the season for the Trojans who haven’t allowed a goal in the last 409 minutes of play.
HLGU’s winning goal came in the 19th minute after Sergi Beltrol found Luis Rincon deep inside the box. Rincon, in turn, placed the ball in the back of the net to give the Trojans the 1-0 lead.
Felipe Silva made it 2-0 in favor of the Trojans in the 30th minute. Ty Williams fed Silva the ball inside the box and Silva took care of the rest as he beat William Woods’ goalkeeper Jeremy Herrman to take almost all hope away for an Owl comeback.
Silva took the rest of the wind out of the Owl’s sails early in the second half. His goal in the 48th minute did all but end the game as the Trojans took a 3-0 lead.
The win marks the Trojans’ seventh in a row. HLGU will try to make it eight this Saturday as its hosts Williams Baptist. The homecoming contest is slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. on Blackwell Field.
HLGU is a Division I NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) school and a member of the American Midwest Conference.
