HANNIBAL, Mo. – The Lady Trojans were defeated by Park University Thursday night 1-3. HLGU was looking to move into a fourth place tie with Park in the American Midwest Conference standings, but fell into a tie for fifth with William Woods.
The ladies seemed to be sleepwalking through the first set and found themselves down 7-18 before they woke up. HLGU tried to battle back, but the deficit was too much as Park took the first set 25-17.
There was no disappointing start in the second set as the Lady Trojans battled back-and-forth with the Lady Pirates. The set featured eight lead changes and 18 ties before HLGU took it 29-27. With Park a point away from taking the set, the Lady Trojans battled back from a 24-19 deficit. The next seven points would belong to the ladies before the Lady Pirates tied it up at 25. Brook Van Es put HLGU up 28-27 before the set finally ended with a ball handling error committed by Park.
The third game was just as thrilling but didn’t end well for the Lady Trojans. After working its way to a five point lead, the Lady Trojans allowed Park to come back within a point. The ladies took back control and were only a point away from taking the third set before the Lady Pirates went on a four point run to take it 26-24.
HLGU didn’t let up in the fourth set but things started to unravel as a 14-14 tie quickly turned into a 14-19 Park lead. The ladies tried to come back but Park was too much as it took the set 25-17 as well as the match.
The Lady Trojans will try to improve its 8-10 record on October 10 as it host conference foe Stephens College. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Mabee Sports Complex.
HLGU is a Division I NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) school and a member of the American Midwest Conference.
