HANNIBAL, Mo. – The Lady Trojans won its third straight soccer match Saturday afternoon in its homecoming contest against Benedictine University at Springfield. The 4-0 victory improves the ladies’ conference record to 5-2 as they currently sit third in the American Midwest Conference standings.
HLGU outshout the Lady Bulldogs 25-3 and placed 11 of the 25 shots on goal en route to its third straight shutout. Lady Trojan goalkeeper Whitney Voepel has now gone 350 minutes without giving up a goal.
The Lady Trojans picked up its first goal in the 23rd minute as Melissa Ramirez fed a nice ball in the box to Sarah Schmidt. The goal was Schmidt’s first of the season and proved to be the winning goal of the match.
HLGU quickly struck again, this time in the 27th minute, as Fernanda Miaci picked up her 11th goal of the season. Ramirez earned her second assists of the afternoon after finding Miaci in the middle of the pitch. Miaci used her speed to bypass the defenders and calmly placed the ball past Lady Bulldog goalkeeper Lindsay Taylor.
The ladies went up 3-0 in the 50th minute thanks to a bad pass by the Lady Bulldogs. Lady Trojan Sarah Hammock intercepted the poor pass and sprinted down the field and deep into the box. She then crossed the ball over to Schmidt who earned her second goal of the day.
Hammock produced HLGU’s final goal in the 54th minute thanks to a nice pass from Jasman Edmonds. Hammock settled the pass from Edmonds, made a few dibbles and then placed the ball into the back of the net to give the Lady Trojans the 4-0 lead.
The win puts the ladies just a game under .500 with a 6-7 overall record. The Lady Trojans will have its chance to improve its record this Wednesday as its hosts conference rival Missouri Baptist. The game is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. on Blackwell Field.
