HANNIBAL, Mo. – The men’s soccer team won its eighth straight contest Saturday in a 5-1 thrashing over Williams Baptist College. The win improves Hannibal-LaGrange’s conference record to 5-0 as the Trojans sit atop the American Midwest Conference standings.
The Trojans outshot the Eagles 30-9 and placed over half of its shots on goal. Hannibal-LaGrange goalkeeper Keith Miller helped the Trojans to the 5-1 win with four saves on the day.
The Trojans’ first goal came in the 13th minute after Ty Williams was fouled inside the box setting up a penalty kick by Adolfo Cazorla. Cazorla chose to kick it to the right as Eagle goalkeeper Hector Vera dove to Cazorla’s left and watched the ball fly into the back of the net.
Hannibal-LaGrange went up 2-0 just a minute later after Felipe Silva found Williams at the top of the box. After a nifty move, Williams shot toward the near post to beat the Eagle goalkeeper and earn his sixth goal of the season.
Joao Junqueira earned the third goal of the game for HLGU after a beautiful sequence of passes. Williams started the sequence with a pass to Sergi Beltrol who, in turn, crossed it to Junqueira. The goal was Junqueira’s first of the season and helped put the game away for the Trojans.
After allowing a goal to the Eagles, the Trojans snuck another goal in after a Mario Ferrero fed the ball to Luis Rincon. Rincon was then able to chip a shot over the keeper to move the Trojan lead back to three.
HLGU’s final goal came in the 87th minute by Thiago Pereira. Silva, as he has done all season, earned the assist after Pereira’s shot floated over the keeper and into the back of the net.
The Trojans will try to improve its 11-2 overall and 9-0 home record this Wednesday against conference rival Missouri Baptist. The home contest is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. on Blackwell Field.
HLGU is a Division I NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) school and a member of the American Midwest Conference.
