HANNIBAL, Mo. – The Lady Trojans used a strong second half to surge past Missouri Baptist in Thursday’s soccer match. The conference win moves the ladies past William Woods and Missouri Baptist and into second place with a 6-2 American Midwest Conference record.
The Lady Trojan defense started out a little shaky after a miss clear allowed the Lady Spartans to take a 1-0 lead. But that was all Hannibal-LaGrange would give up as it outshot Missouri Baptist 20-14 and put nine shots on goal. Lady Trojan goalkeeper Whitney Voepel came away with four saves on the day to help the ladies to its seventh win of the season.
In the 37th minute Fernanda Maici hit the equalizer from about 30 yards out. The shot floated over Lady Spartan goalkeeper Samantha Schulze’s head to knot it up at one and give the Lady Trojans some confidence going into halftime.
The ladies struck early in the second half as Sarah Schmidt’s cross found Miaci’s head and then the back of the net. Miaci’s header proved to be the game winning goal as it put the Lady Trojans up 2-1.
“It was a real important goal since it gave us the lead and the momentum,” commented Coach Jason Nichols. “The goal itself was one of the best goals I’ve ever seen at this level. The cross from Sarah was driven in hard and Fernanda’s header came from just beyond the penalty kick mark. That type of shot really shows the talent of Fernanda and the power she has not only with her feet but with her head. Sarah deserves credit as well because, without the great cross from her, we never would have had that chance at the goal.”
Maici wasn’t yet done with the Lady Spartans. She scored her third goal of the day in the 57th minute and her fourth in the 80th minute.
After being fed the ball by Sarah Hammock, Miaci beat the Lady Spartan goalkeeper as she hit her shot toward the far post to give the ladies a 3-1 lead. Her fourth goal came after Katelyn Fray’s cross found Miaci deep in the box. Miaci then out jumped the keeper to head it into the goal and put the game way out of reach for the Lady Spartans.
The ladies now hold a 7-7 overall record and have won four straight contests. The Lady Trojans will go for five wins in a row this Saturday as it hosts Park University. The AMC match, which will feature the top two teams in the conference, is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m. on Blackwell Field.
