HANNIBAL, Mo. – After almost 108 minutes of scoreless play, the Lady Trojans finally broke the tie for a double overtime victory over Park University. The win improved the women’s American Midwest Conference record to 7-2 and pushed Hannibal-LaGrange into first place in the AMC standings, with a half game lead over William Woods.
Hannibal-LaGrange seemed to be in control for most of the game as the ladies out shot Park 17-10. Lady Trojan goalkeeper Whitney Voepel kept the Lady Pirates off the scoreboard with four saves on the day. The shutout was the Lady Trojans’ fifth of the season and fourth out of its last five games.
The Lady Trojans had several opportunities to grab the lead in the first half as the team looked for its fifth straight win. Fernanda Miaci had a long range shot deflect off of the crossbar and Raelene Blanton’s shot inside the box nearly found its way past Lady Pirate goalkeeper Ellen Ghirardi. Ghirardi just got her fingertips on the ball, deflecting it off of the crossbar and out of harm’s way.
After a scoreless second half and overtime, Miaci finally found the back of the net for the Lady Trojans in the second overtime. The golden goal came in the 108th minute as Miaci snuck a shot under the diving arms of goalkeeper Alisha Hoskins. Hoskins had subbed in for the Lady Pirate starting goalkeeper in the first overtime.
The win improves the Lady Trojans’ overall record to 8-7. The ladies next contest will be in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa as HLGU faces Iowa Wesleyan. The October 19 contest is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
HLGU is a Division I NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) school and a member of the American Midwest Conference.
