Lady Trojans Split with Benedictine at Springfield, Baker

HANNIBAL, Mo. – The Lady Trojans volleyball squad split its two matchups today in the second day of the Trojan Classic.  HLGU earned a 3-0 win over conference foe Benedictine University at Springfield but lost its second match of the day 0-3 against Baker University.

The Lady Trojans jumped out to an 8-3 lead in its first set against Benedictine at Springfield and carried the momentum throughout the set.  The Lady Bulldogs came within three several times in the set but were unable to get any closer as Hannibal-LaGrange took set one 25-16.

The Lady Bulldogs started the second set with a four point run before the Lady Trojans were able to get on the board after a kill by Stephanie Gustafson.  Hannibal-LaGrange climbed back into the lead after another Gustafson kill in the midst of a Lady Trojan seven point run.  The Lady Trojans battled back-and-forth with the Lady Bulldogs throughout the middle of the set which featured three ties and two lead changes.  However, HLGU proved to be too much for the Lady Bulldogs as it finished the set on a 10-1 run to take set two 25-17.

The Lady Trojans finished off the Lady Bulldogs in a thrilling third set win.  The set featured 13 ties, nine lead changes and a two point come-from-behind win for Hannibal-LaGrange.  After an 18-18 tie, the Lady Bulldogs opened up a three point lead before the Lady Trojans went on a 6-1 run to take the third set 25-23 and the match 3-0.

The American Midwest Conference win pushed the Lady Trojans into a fourth place tie in the conference standings with Williams Baptist.  Both Hannibal-LaGrange and Williams Baptist have 7-5 AMC records.

The Lady Trojans second match of the day came against Baker University, a member of the Heart of America Athletic Conference.

The Lady Trojans and Lady Wildcats found each other tied five times before its final tie at 11 points each.  From that point on the match belonged to Baker which climbed out to a six point lead before Hannibal-LaGrange tried to mount a comeback.  The Lady Trojans were able to come within three points before Baker finished the set Junior Brook Van Es earned all-tournament honors at the Trojan Classic.on a 6-3 run to take it 25-19.

HLGU quickly found itself down by a large margin in the next set as it had a hard time keeping up with the Lady Wildcats.  Baker used a 17-5 run to finish off the Lady Trojans in the second set.  The Lady Wildcats took the lopsided set 25-10 and built a 2-0 match lead.

The Lady Trojans tried to stay up with Baker in the third set but found itself staring at a nine point deficit as the Lady Wildcats held a 18-9 lead.  Even with the Lady Trojans outscoring Baker 10-7 in the final points, the Baker lead proved to be too much as the Lady Wildcats took the set 25-19.

The Lady Trojans finished the classic with a 2-2 record while outside hitter Brook Van Es earned all-tournament honors.  Van Es finished the classic with 47 digs and 46 kills in 16 sets played.

Hannibal-LaGrange will try to improve its 11-12 record against Columbia College on October 18.  The AMC match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. in Columbia, Mo.
