JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Trojan men and women cross country teams both finished in the top five at the Illinois Collegiate Invite Saturday.  The women came away with a second place finish out of 10 teams while the men finished fourth out of 12 teams.

“Today was a very good day overall for the men’s and women’s teams,” stated Coach Tracy Jex.  “The men’s squad ran a very solid race with Philiph [Tonui] leading the way and the women really showed what they are made of today by running an unfamiliar and longer distance.  This is another step in the right direction for both our men’s and women’s squad.”

The Lady Trojans were led by Breanna Newton who ran her first race in over a month due to injury.  Newton finished the 6K race in fourth place in a time of 23:50.  Close behind were teammates Mandi Riddle and Nicole Griesbaum.  Riddle finished in 24:33 to place 13th while Griesbaum crossed the finish line in a time of 24:53 to finish 15th overall.

Sarah Erickson and Jennifer Yoder rounded out the scoring runners for the Lady Trojans.  Erickson finished in a time of 25:26 while Yoder came across the finish line in 25:43 to place 23rd and 24th overall.

Tonui set the pace in the men’s race with a time of 25:58 for a first place finish in the 8K.  The finish marks the second race this season that Tonui has come in as the meet champion.

Teammates John Bedsworth and Troy Pace both did their part in ensuring a fourth place team finish for the Trojans.  Bedsworth came in just two seconds ahead of Pace as the two finished in 24th and 25th place with times of 28:08 and 28:10, respectively.

Tyler Malone and Brett Jones were the final two scorers to come across the finish line for the Trojans.  Malone finished the race in 32nd place with a time of 28:39 while Jones finished in 34th place with a time of 28:42.

The Hannibal-LaGrange harriers will be in Lamoni, Iowa on October 22 to race in the Graceland Invitational.  The women’s race is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. with the men’s race to follow.
