LEBANON, Ill. – No. 14 Hannibal-LaGrange got the best of old conference foe McKendree University in the final seconds of its soccer match Tuesday night. The 2-1 victory improves the Trojans’ record to 13-2 and hands McKendree, who is on the verge of becoming an NCAA Division II institution, its first loss of the season.
Trojan goalkeeper Logan Miller came away with a season high nine saves on the night to help Hannibal-LaGrange earn its 10th straight win. The Trojans were outshot by the Bearcats 30-14 but were still able to exit Lebanon with a win.
The Trojans’ first goal came in the 32nd minute as Alex Porras’ shot deflected off Bearcat goalkeeper Joe Sagar. Luis Rincon collected the rebound and buried a shot into the back of the net to put the Trojans up 1-0.
Hannibal-LaGrange lost the lead early in the second half as McKendree’s Anthony Grant hit the equalizer in the 50th minute. The Trojans and Bearcats remained deadlocked at one until the final minute of play. Just as it looked like overtime was likely to play a factor, Thiago Pereira sent in a cross to Ty Williams who placed the ball past the Bearcat goalkeeper for the game winner.
The Trojans will now travel to Jackson, Tenn. for its October 22 contest against Union University. The match is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. at the Smith Memorial Soccer Complex.
