HANNIBAL, Mo. – The Hannibal-LaGrange women’s soccer team has carried its winning streak to six games now after its 4-3 defeat over Iowa Wesleyan. The Lady Trojans came away with the victory in dramatic fashion as Hannibal-LaGrange scored the winning goal in the final minute of the game.
The Lady Trojans were outshot by the Lady Tigers 20-12 but were still able to find its way out of Mt. Pleasant with a victory. Hannibal-LaGrange goalkeeper Whitney Voepel came away with nine saves on the day to push her up to 90 saves on the year.
The Lady Trojans struck early in the match as Fernanda Miaci buried her 17th goal of the season. Teammate Jasman Edmond worked her way into the box before finding Miaci open for the easy goal to put Hannibal-LaGrange up 1-0 in the second minute of play.
Even with the early goal, the Lady Trojans found itself down 2-1 at halftime. The Lady Tigers tied the game in the 32nd minute and then took the lead with just seconds left in the half. However, the Lady Trojans wouldn’t let Iowa Wesleyan take over as HLGU hit the equalizer in the 57th minute. Sarah Schmidt gave the Lady Trojans the 2-2 tie after Katelyn Fray found her in the box for the easy goal.
An Iowa Wesleyan own goal gave the Lady Trojans a 3-2 lead before the Lady Tigers tied the contest up again with 10 minutes left in the match.
As the teams entered into the final minute of play, it looked as if overtime was inevitable. However, the Lady Trojans found itself with one last chance as Miaci readied herself for a corner kick for Hannibal-LaGrange. Her corner found Rebekah Schwartz who headed it deep in the box to Melissa Ramirez. Ramirez then coolly placed the ball past the Lady Tiger goalkeeper and into the back of the net with only 25 ticks remaining on the clock.
The 4-3 win over the Lady Tigers pushes Hannibal-LaGrange’s record to 9-7 overall as the ladies prepare for their final regular season conference match against Missouri Baptist. HLGU will face the Lady Spartans on October 22 at 3:00 p.m. at the Busch Soccer Park located in Fenton, Mo.
HLGU is a Division I NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) school and a member of the American Midwest Conference.
