Trojans Fall to San Diego Christian

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Hannibal-LaGrange dropped the first match of its California volleyball tour Friday afternoon against San Diego Christian College. The Lady Trojans lost all but the second set as the 3-1 loss dropped its record to 11-14.
Erika Davis led the Lady Trojans in kills with 19 against the Lady Hawks. Kayla Caffey complimented Davis with 13 kills of her own while teammate Brook Van Es finished the match with 10 kills and 14 digs. Leading the way in assists was Megan Henry with 42 on the afternoon.
The Lady Trojans carried a one point lead early in the first set only to see it quickly grow into a 20-12 deficit over the next 19 points. The Lady Hawks finished off Hannibal-LaGrange as it scored the final four point of the set to take it 25-14.
The Lady Trojans got off to a quick start in the second set as it scored the first four points. Hannibal-LaGrange would stay in control for the rest of the set as it stretched its lead to as high as nine. Davis finished off the Lady Hawks with a kill set up by Henry to take set two 25-19.
The third set between Hannibal-LaGrange and San Diego Christian proved to be the best of the afternoon. The two teams traded blows throughout the set as there were 10 ties and six lead changes which led to a 25-23 set loss for Hannibal-LaGrange.
The Lady Trojans had leads of three, four and two but lost all three to Lady Hawk rallies. After climbing back from a three point deficit, the Lady Trojans found itself tied at 21 with San Diego Christian. However the ladies could get no closer to taking the third set and allowed the Lady Hawks to take a 2-1 match lead.
Hannibal-LaGrange started out flat in the fourth set as it watched the Lady Hawks work its way to a 10-4 lead. The Lady Trojans tried to stay up with San Diego Christian throughout the next 18 points, but found itself down by a larger margin (20-12) with even less points to work around. However, Hannibal-LaGrange fought back as it climbed out of the eight point deficit and twice pulled within two points, but the Lady Hawks proved to be too much as it took the final two point of the match to win the final set 25-21.
The Lady Trojans will now travel to Riverside, Calif. as it prepares for a 1:00 p.m. (central time) match against California State University at San Marcos and a 9:30 p.m. (central time) match against La Sierra University.
