Fenton, Mo. – The Lady Trojans fell behind early in its Saturday afternoon soccer match against AMC rival Missouri Baptist. The 2-0 Lady Spartan lead seemed to be the end to Hannibal-LaGrange’s winning streak, but the ladies never gave up and fought back to earn the 3-2 double overtime win. The win pushes the Lady Trojans’ American Midwest Conference record to 8-2 and clinches Hannibal-LaGrange a first round bye in the AMC tournament.
Lady Trojan goalkeeper Whitney Voepel finished the day with a career high 15 saves to give her 105 on the season as the Lady Trojans trumped Missouri Baptist for the second time this year.
Hannibal-LaGrange gave up goals in the 43rd and 54th minute to give the Lady Spartans a 2-0 advantage. It wasn’t until the 75th minute that the Lady Trojans finally got on the board.
After a cross into the box by Raelene Blanton, Sarah Schmidt’s shot deflected off of the goalkeeper and into teammate Fernanda Miaci’s feet. Miaci then buried a shot into the back of the net to cut the Lady Spartan lead in half.
The ladies scored again just minutes later as Melissa Ramirez’s ball up top found Miaci who calmly placed it past Lady Spartan goalkeeper Kekua Lupton. Miaci’s equalizer was her, conference leading, 19th goal of the season.
The two teams remained scoreless throughout the rest of the second half and first overtime before a Lady Trojan corner kick deep into the second overtime finally helped end the contest.
Miaci’s corner in the 109th minute led to all kinds of havoc for the Lady Spartans. Sarah Hammock’s header, off of the corner kick, deflected off of the goalkeeper and to teammate Jasman Edmond whose shot also deflected off of the Lady Spartan goalkeeper. Lady Trojan Katelyn Fray then picked up the deflection and finished the chaos off with her first goal of the season to give Hannibal-LaGrange the 3-2 victory.
With the win, the Lady Trojans improve its overall record to 10-7 and clinched at least a share of the regular season conference title. Hannibal-LaGrange will now travel to Lebanon, Ill. to finish its regular season against old AMC foe McKendree University. The October 27 non-conference contest is set to begin at 6:00 p.m.
