JACKSON, Tenn. – A slow start doomed the Lady Trojans as it fell 79-62 Tuesday night to No. 2 Union University.  The loss drops Hannibal-LaGrange’s record to 1-2 after an 81-78 overtime victory at William Penn last week gave the Lady Trojans its first win.

The ladies shot a measly 28 percent from the field in the first half and couldn’t find its way to the charity stripe as Hannibal-LaGrange went into the half down 33-16.

The Lady Trojans hung tight with Union for the opening five minutes but, with the score 7-5 in favor of the Lady Bulldogs, Union used a 26-11 run to pull away and enter halftime with a 17 point lead.

Union held the Lady Trojans in check down low as guard Trenee Thornton led all Hannibal-LaGrange scorers in the first half with eight points while dishing out two assists.  Ashleigh Spencer was the top rebounder in the first half for the ladies with five boards.  Both forwards Ashley Wilson and Spencer were held to a combined six points in the half.

The second half was a different story for Hannibal-LaGrange.  The ladies kept chipping away at the Lady Bulldog lead and eventually narrowed the gap down to nine.

After Hannibal-LaGrange fought back to a 10 point deficit, Union used a 15-3 run to open its lead up to 22.  However, the Lady Trojans refused to give up and matched the Lady Bulldog run with a 20-7 run of its own and closed within nine points with 5:38 remaining in the game.

The Lady Trojans could get no closer but showed great competitive spirit in the 17 point loss to Union.

Wilson finished with her first double-double of the season as she scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.  Spencer was right behind her with 15 points and seven boards while Thornton finished with 13 points on the night.

Hannibal-LaGrange will now travel to St. Louis, Mo. to participate in the St. Louis College of Pharmacy Classic.  The ladies will face Manhattan Christian at 6:00 p.m. on November 4 and Stephens College at 3:00 p.m. on November 5.

Hannibal-LaGrange University is a Division I NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) institution and a member of the American Midwest Conference.
