HANNIBAL, Mo. – The Trojans’ basketball squad fell to No. 13 St. Ambrose (NAIA Division II) 83-70 Thursday night. The home loss drops Hannibal-LaGrange to 0-1 on the season.
Arii Meuel led all Trojan scorers with 16 points on the night while teammate Leon Carswell finished the contest with 15 points and five rebounds. Jurgen Lico also finished the game in double figures with 14 points scored.
The Trojans stuck with the Fighting Bees for the majority of the opening half. Hannibal-LaGrange fought back from a six point deficit to grab a 24-22 lead with 9:16 remaining in the first half. However, St. Ambrose quickly took back the lead in its next possession after a foul by Lico resulted in a three point play for the Fighting Bees.
St. Ambrose didn’t give up its lead for the rest of the half and used an 8-1 run to close out the half with a 46-36 lead.
The Fighting Bees continued its run in the second half to quickly jump out to an 18 point lead. After a Trojan timeout, Hannibal-LaGrange began to chip away at the deficit and climbed within 10 points of St. Ambrose after a trey by Allistair McCann.
The Trojans finally brought the Fighting Bees’ lead down to single digits at the 7:46 mark after a Chris Smith jumper made it 66-58. The Trojans would climb within eight once more but could get no closer as the Fighting Bees came away with the 13 point victory.
Hannibal-LaGrange will now travel to Point Lookout, Mo. on November 5 to face another NAIA Division II ranked opponent. No. 12 College of the Ozarks will host the Trojans with a 3:00 p.m. tipoff time.
