Lady Trojans Advance to AMC Final

HANNIBAL, Mo. – The Lady Trojans defeated Williams Woods 1-0 Monday afternoon to move on to the American Midwest Conference championship game against Park University.

Lady Trojan goalkeeper Whitney Voepel came away with four saves and picked up her sixth shutout of the season to help lead the ladies past William Woods.  Hannibal-LaGrange also outmatched the Lady Owls with shots taken and shots on goal.  The Lady Trojans doubled the amount of shots taken by William Woods (16-8) and almost doubled the amount of shots on goal (7-4).

Both teams had opportunities to score early with three shots apiece in the opening 15 minutes.  The Lady Trojans took over the offensive presence for the rest of the half as it outshot Williams Woods 10-1 in the final 30 minutes.  Even with the offensive pressure, Hannibal-LaGrange could not get anything by Lady Owls’ goalkeeper Kelly Abernathy and entered halftime deadlocked with William Woods.

The Lady Trojans weren’t able to get a shot of in the second half until the 57th minute but its first shot of the half proved to be the deciding factor in the contest.  After Miaci picked up a deflection in the box, she rifled a shot off the diving goalkeeper’s hands and watched as the ball slowly rolled past the goal line.  The goal was Miaci’s conference leading 21st of the season and her sixth game winning goal this year.

Hannibal-LaGrange’s defense withstood the Lady Owls’ offensive pressure throughout the rest of the half and completely shut down Kelsey Sanders, William Woods’ best offensive threat, to earn the 1-0 semifinal win.

The Lady Trojans will travel to Parkville, Mo. this Thursday, November 10 to face Park University in the AMC championship game at 1:00 p.m.  A win would give the Lady Trojans its first conference tournament title and automatically qualify the team for the NAIA National Tournament.
