Trojans Drop Clarke 74-67

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Hannibal-LaGrange picked up its first win of the 2011-12 season Monday evening against Clarke University. The 74-67 victory moves the Trojans’ record to 1-2 on the year.
Arii Meuel, Gerrell Wells and Abraham Arinyakono all finished the contest scoring in double figures for the Trojans. Meuel finished the game as the top scorer for Hannibal-LaGrange as he came away with 21 points. Wells finished the night with 16 points scored while Arinyakono came away with 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Trojans started the first half a little cold offensively as it was only able to score 12 points in the opening 10 minutes. But a 8-2 run change a five point deficit in to a 20-19 Trojan lead after Drew Jefferson laid in a basket with 5:38 left in the half.
Hannibal-LaGrange continued to fight for the halftime lead as it swap several leads with Clarke. Wells capped off an entertaining final five minutes after Jefferson found him open for a three point shot to give the Trojans a 31-30 lead at the half.
The Trojans quickly gave up its lead as Clarke built a five point lead at the 18:43 mark. Hannibal-LaGrange could only gain ties with the Crusaders until Allistair McCann’s jumper gave the Trojans a 45-43 lead with 12:27 remaining.
The Trojans and Crusaders fought continuously for the lead as the final 12 minutes featured seven ties and six lead changes.
With 1:28 remaining, Hannibal-LaGrange and Clarke were deadlocked at 67 before Wells helped start a 7-0 run and give the Trojans the 74-67 victory.
Hannibal-LaGrange will now travel to Marshall, Mo. to take on Missouri Valley College. The November 9 game is set to tipoff at 7:30 p.m. in Grover C. Redford Gymnasium.
