PARKVILLE, Mo. - Hannibal-LaGrange's Sarah Hammock punched the Lady Trojans' ticket to the 2011 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship Opening Round Thursday afternoon at Park University's Julian Field, ousting the Lady Pirates 2-1 in the 95th minute to claim the 2011 AMC Women's Soccer Tournament championship.
Park (11-8) had trailed for nearly 50 minutes, between the 34thand 82nd, when Jasman Edmond scored off of Fernanda Miaci's corner kick, getting a pass from Brittany Johnson in the six-yard box 33:40 into the game.
Hannibal-LaGrange (12-8) took a 1-0 lead to intermission, and held the lead held until the 82nd minute when Ashley Maxwell brought back life to the Pirates' season, scoring from 45 yards out over the head of Trojan keeper Whitney Voepel to knot the game at 1-1. Maxwell's score was assisted by Chelsie Shepard.
Park took four more shots after the goal, including two that hit the crossbar, but the Pirates couldn't convert, sending the game to overtime and enabling Hammock to hit the game-winner, assisted by Ashley Hupfield.
Ellen Ghirardi picked up the loss for Park, making three saves, and Voepel, a first-team all-conference goalkeeper, earned the win for Hannibal-LaGrange.
Park outshot the Hannibal-LaGrange 12-8, but the Lady Trojans used a 6-3 edge in shots on goal in the win, which qualified ladies for next week's NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship Opening Round.
