by Carolyn Carpenter

The public is invited to enjoy an evening of music on the campus of Hannibal-LaGrange University on Tuesday, April 24, 2012.  This special event will take place in the Parker Theatre of the Roland Fine Arts Center and begin at 7:00pm. The evening will feature HLGU’s Jazz Choir, Chamber Choir, and Concert Choir under the direction of L. Jane Griffen and accompanied by Karen Meade and Mrs. Griffen.  This event will be the final concert of the year for the choirs.

HLGU’s Jazz Choir consists of eleven students. This special choir will sing a variety of jazz favorites including: Take Five, Moonglow, Don’t Get Around Much Anymore and several other pieces.  Two senior soloists, Katelyn Fray and Regina Pruitt, will also perform.  The Jazz Choir performs for schools and civic events throughout the year.

The HLGU Chamber Choir features 13 students who travel to churches and schools all year, representing HLGU and sharing their life experiences through music and testimony.  The Chamber Choir portion of the evening will include group numbers as well as men’s and ladies’ pieces.  Their entire program is a cappella.  For its first year together, Chamber Choir has been very busy with a total of 26 appearances.  Chamber Choir will perform a variety of numbers including: Let All the People Say, Amen, Search Me, O God, Nothin’ Gonna Stumble My Feet, Ride the Chariot, In That Great Gettin’ Up Mornin’, God of Wonders, and others.

HLGU’s Concert Choir will end the evening with Robert Ray’s Gospel Mass.  This work represents six sections of the mass, and will be uniquely sung in the style of gospel music. Accompanied by piano, bass guitar, and drums, this is an exciting work which will feature many solos.  Music majors from this semester’s Advanced Choral Conducting class may be featured as guest conductors.

Concessions will be available before and after the concert to help support the HLGU Music Club, NAfME .  The concert is free and open to the public.
