Hannibal-LaGrange University's Emergency Medical Services Program will hold an open house on Wednesday, August 8 from 3:30 pm-6:30 pm in the Burt Administration Building. During this informational event prospective students will be able to speak with the HLGU EMS instructor, tour the HLGU facilities/campus, and speak with Financial Aid representatives.

HLGU's Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program offers careers in pre-hospital emergency medicine. The Fall 2012 programs will include a Basic Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B) and an EMT-Paramedic program. The EMT-B program provides training to care for patients in an emergency situation and care for them in transporting them by ambulance to the hospital under medical direction. The EMT-Paramedic provides advanced level of pre-hospital care. They are trained in the use of complex medical equipment and are capable of administering drugs. To enroll in the EMT-Paramedic program students must have a valid and current EMT-B license. The EMT-Paramedic program may lead to an Associate of Applied Science degree.

Classes for the EMT-Basic program will begin on August 25 from 8:00 am-5:00 pm (with a one hour lunch break) and will be held in the Mathews Science Building. The EMT-B class is a 15 week program.

The EMT-Paramedic class is a 15 month program. Students must hold a current license as an EMT-B and pass entrance requirements for admission. This class will meet on Thursdays starting August 23, from 8:00 am-5:00 pm with a 1 hour lunch break. The EMT-Paramedic course consists of didactic, hospital, clinical and field internships at a diverse group of hospitals and ambulance services.

“We understand the importance of pre-hospital care and want to assist by providing this educational opportunity. It is our hope that by offering this program in Hannibal, we will help meet the needs of our community and surrounding area,” stated Anne Riggs, MSN, RN, Director of Nursing & Allied Health Division.
