Rainy weather didn't dampen the spirits of the 300 graduates who walked across the stage in ceremonial regalia to shake the hand of HLGU's President, Dr. Anthony Allen as they received their diplomas on Saturday, May 4.

Dr. Allen was a fitting keynote speaker for the ceremony as this was the first graduating class under his presidency.

"Today is a special day for me personally. Last year, Stacy and I were introduced and it was announced that I was elected as the new president of Hannibal-LaGrange University. It has been an incredible year, and I have been pleased to get to know this wonderful family of faculty, staff, and students. Hannibal has become our home, and we have been welcomed with open arms."

Dr. Allen went on to share a message with the graduates about a commencement ceremony being the beginning of a new life and related it to the Israelites crossing the Jordan to go into the Promised Land.

"Crossing the Jordan River was the will of God, but with it came transition, change, and uncertainty...the children of Israel were to confidently face the uncertainty of their future trusting that the where God guides, He provides."

"As you commence this journey of faith (post university), I want to remind you of two truths that will guide you on your journey of life," Allen continued. "Times of transitions are inevitable and prove new opportunities of growth and we face the future with confidence because we know who guides us."

Following the message, Dr. Allen received the recommendation from Dr. David Pelletier, Vice President for Academic Affairs, to accept the graduating class of 2013 whose credentials have been carefully evaluated and been found to be complete according to appropriate standards. "On behalf of the HLGU Board of Trustees, I hereby confer upon each the appropriate degree earned," said Dr. Allen.

Also at commencement, the Parkway Distinguished Professor Award was presented to Dr. John Schafer. The award is given by Parkway Baptist Church in St. Louis and selection is based on outstanding professional and personal contributions to Christian education. Dr. Schafer has devoted 26 years of full-time service to HLGU as a professor of business and has also established the HLGU chapter of Phi Beta Lamda.

HLGU also honors one staff member each year. The Staff Member of the Year has been awarded since 2010 and includes nominations by fellow staff members with a vote of affirmation by the administration. This year the award went to Donna Nunn, Assistant Director of Financial Aid. Donna has served HLGU for 25 years. She and her husband, Larry, are fervent supporters of HLGU athletics and Donna is known across campus as a giving and caring person, investing deeply in the lives of HLGU students and coworkers.

Special music during the ceremony was presented by Meagan Connelly, graduating music major. Meagan sang the song "Every Day is a Gift from the Lord." She was accompanied by graduating music major Austin Birkhead on trumpet and Mrs. Connie Craig on piano.

Following the ceremony, graduates recessed out through the HLGU arch on the traditional Walk of Honor, symbolizing the end of their schooling and their entrance into the world as college graduates.
