Hannibal-LaGrange University's annual traveling children's show has been announced as King Midas and the Golden Touch by Willard Simms. The cast will perform October 9-11 in four different elementary schools in the area with on-campus performances at HLGU on October 10 at 9:30 am and October 11 at 7 pm in the Parker Theatre. Admission for the HLGU showings is $1 per person for all ages.
The group will also put on a performance during Hannibal's Folk Life Festival on Saturday, October 19 at 2 pm in Nipper Park. Audience members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets to this park performance.
As the story goes, King Midas is too greedy for his own good. He already has piles of gold, but he wants more. When a friendly sorceress visits his kingdom, he talks her into granting him one wish: everything that he touches must be turned to gold. King Midas finds that the results are far from what he expected, as his treasure chests, his dinner, and finally his only daughter are turned into gold. The children in the audience help the king learn a valuable lesson, that gold alone isn't enough to make you happy.
This show is student-directed by senior theatre major Lindsey McCloy. It has a running time of approximately 30 minutes and though the target audience is kindergarten through 5th grade, the show is fun for all ages.
