Hannibal-LaGrange University is excited to announce the addition of a Bachelor of Science in Social Work major for traditional classes and the ADVANCE Adult Degree Completion Program. An informational meeting regarding this new major will take place in Hannibal on Tuesday, November 5, at 6 pm in the Burt Administration Building, room 215, and in Poplar Bluff on Thursday, November 7, at 6:30 pm in the Academic Resource Commons (ARC), library room 102 on the campus of Three Rivers College. The new social work major will begin in 2014.

The field of social work is quickly growing and the job market is expected to increase 25% by the year 2020, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Nationally, social workers earn an average of $55,000 a year.

The social work field is very extensive with many diverse jobs available for a social worker. Being employed in prisons, schools, hospitals, working with the Department of Mental Health, Division of Aging, and case management are only a small portion of the many opportunities this degree can support.

During the meeting in Hannibal, traditional program students will meet with Dean Schoonover, Chair, Division of Social Science, and Assistant Professor for Sociology and Social Work. Degree completion students in Hannibal and Poplar Bluff will meet with Marc Hurt, Director of ADVANCE Program. Attendees are encouraged to bring a copy of their college transcripts for a degree plan that will be completed that evening.

"The social work major to be offered in the ADVANCE Program will allow adults to start or further their careers in the field of social work by attending class one night a week completing one class at a time," said Marc Hurt. "Men and women looking for the opportunity to help and be of service to a population needing help with life issues will benefit from a bachelor degree in social work."

Students in HLGU's ADVANCE Program stay with the same group of adult learners (cohort) throughout the remainder of the degree program. With an associate's degree or its equivalent, from an accredited institution, students may be able to complete a bachelor's degree in as little as 19 months.

Hannibal-LaGrange University's ADVANCE Program has been viewed as an innovative and exceptionally effective approach to education by professional educators and employers. Tested principles of adult learning theory are incorporated to make all classes stimulating, relevant, challenging, and rewarding.
