Hannibal, MO - The HLG soccer teams took both games of a double-header against rival Culver-Stockton on Thursday. The Men's Team, finally out of a horde of nationally-ranked or conference foes, took the chance to exhale to the fullest, notching six goals and getting starters rest and back-ups an opportunity to work. The team, which received goals from four players and completed a shutout with two different goal keepers (Jeff Jelinek and AJ Pruett), was pleased with the balance and the win, and hope to carry the momentum into Saturday's conference game versus Harris Stowe.
On the Women's side, the Trojans have struggled of late, giving up several close games they felt could have been won. Coach Nichols emphasized a winning mentality this week in practice, and the team took those sessions into account coming up with a 2-0 victory on a solid effort. Goals were scored by Christina Schremp and Alysa Askew, and a shutout was maintained by a strong defensive collaboration fronted by Colleen Wagner and Melinda Rickard, at stopper and sweeper respectively. The Lady Trojans will try to follow-up on their newly adopted winning mantra following the Men's game on Saturday.
HLG is a Division I NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) school and a member of the American Midwest Conference.
