Hannibal, MO - Hannibal-LaGrange College announced Wednesday that Gaither Vocal Band lead singer Guy Penrod would be this year's annual Booster Banquet speaker.
Formerly scheduled 2006 Booster Banquet speaker, Gloria Gaither, is unable to attend due to family illness. “We are disappointed that Mrs. Gaither will not be in attendance at our 65th annual Booster Banquet, however, our thoughts and prayers are with her and her family during this challenging time,” said Dr. Woodrow Burt, President of Hannibal-LaGrange College.
For more than a decade, Guy Penrod has been thrilling Homecoming audiences with his big voice and even larger stage presence. The tall Texan with the flowing salt-and-pepper hair has become one of the most popular and recognizable members of the Gaither Vocal Band and the Homecoming family. In the early 80's he worked as a studio singer, backing up voices such as Steve Green, Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, and Garth Brooks. It was at this time that Penrod was first introduced to Bill Gaither and later joined the Gaither Vocal Band as the lead singer. Since that time, Penrod has been embraced by audiences all over the world and has become a defining influence for the group over the years. “I honestly believe that the Vocal Band is about bringing hope, life, freedom and mercy to those who will listen. It is not about me. It is not about the Vocal Band. It's about Jesus,” said Penrod.
Jo Ann Raney, director of Alumni Services and coordinator for the annual HLG Booster Banquet shared that Penrod will be performing his music as well as sharing from his heart.
“We are thrilled to have Guy Penrod agree to come and share with us on such short notice,” added Raney. “A good friend of Bill and Gloria Gaither, Penrod was personally asked by Gloria to take her place at this year's booster banquet. Guy Penrod brings a strong message of hope that is much needed in today's world.”
Raney says that Gloria Gaither is putting HLG on next year's calendar. “Gloria was so apologetic about this year's cancellation, and wanted our banquet attendees to know that she plans to be with us next year.”
Tickets are on sale for the banquet that will be held at 7 p.m. on November 17 in the Mabee Sports Complex. Doors will open at 6 p.m. The banquet includes a performance by HLG's Concert Band.
Banquet tickets are $35 each; students ages 17 and under are $20 each. For more information or to reserve tickets, call the Institutional Advancement Office at (573) 221-3675, ext. 344.
