HLG HOLDS FIRST IRON CHEF COMPETITION

Hannibal, MO— Hannibal-LaGrange College will hold their first IRON CHEF Competition on Tuesday, January 30th, modeled after the Food network's popular “Iron Chef America”. Information will be available as well as an entry form in the Student Development Office. Sign up for the competition will be on a first-come-first-sign-up basis on January 20th. There will be a $15 entry fee, which will go to HLG Missions.
There will be four to six teams made up of two to three members per team. The competition is open to faculty, staff, and students. The teams will be competing for two prizes. There will be a People's Choice Award, which will be determined by attendees at the competition, and the Iron Chef Award that will be judged by four outside judges: a representative from Refreshment Services Pepsi, a representative from Neiman Foods (County Market), a local celebrity, and Brian England, Regional Vice President for Pioneer College Caterers.
The competition will begin at 4:00 P.M. and end promptly at 5:30 P.M. when the teams will have to present their dishes to the judges. Each team will be required to prepare an appetizer, main course, and a side dish. All dishes prepared must contain the secret ingredient, which will be unveiled at the start of the competition.
The main course must be able to serve 25 people. The appetizer and side dish must be able to serve at least 5 people, extra points may be earned if the dish is prepared in larger quantities. Each team will have the same ingredients and pantry items from which to work. The list of ingredients will be made available at registration. Each team will have their own individual work station and access to the main kitchen (on a limited basis).
The teams will be judged on the following items:
• Taste • Presentation • Organization • Completion of all dishes • Creativity • Originality • Team Attire • Teamwork • Enthusiasm • Crowd Participation • Cleanliness
Brice Baumgartner, associate director of admissions at HLG, is the “nimble chairman” and Emcee for the event. The Competition will also be video taped and submitted to the Food Network.
Prizes will be awarded and the winning recipe will be featured the following week as part of the evening meal.
