Lamoni, IA - The Hannibal-LaGrange College Men’s Volleyball team improved to 4-0 Tuesday night with a tough 3-2 victory on the road at Graceland University in Lamoni, IA. They are now 1-0 in conference play heading into Friday’s rivalry match and 2010 home-opener against Quincy University.
The Trojans got off to a slow start and ended up dropping the first set 28-30. However, they broke through on solid serving and tough defense to pull out a 30-28 win in set two despite only ten kills as a team in that set. After the intermission, HLG blasted Graceland 30-23 but a 22-30 let-down in set four drove the match to a decisive fifth game.
HLG took an early four point lead in the final set and despite Graceland’s attempts to claw back, the Trojans never relinquished it and held on 15-13.
“It was a tough match in a tough atmosphere. Both teams competed and really got after each other tonight,” said HLG Head Men’s Volleyball Coach David Ganser after the win. “We’re still making a lot of mistakes and missed opportunities to put the match away earlier, but there is no such thing as a bad win for us right now – especially on the road in conference play.”
The Trojans were led by sophomore middle blocker Tom Burke who racked up an impressive 16 kills and a .500 attack efficiency on a night where ball control was sloppy on both sides. Freshman Jake Wollenberg added 13 kills in the effort and Matheus Roham registered a double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs. Freshman Anthony Robinson had a huge night for the Yellow Jackets, tallying 36 of Graceland’s 67 kills, but the Trojan block forced him into 17 errors as well, including three in the final set.
HLG now prepares for a home-stand with QU coming in Friday night, January 29, at 7:00 p.m. The following weekend, February 5-6, the Trojans will host St. Xavier University (Friday, February 5 at 5:00 p.m.), Missouri Valley College (Saturday, February 6 at 2:00 p.m.), and Clarke College (Saturday at 6:00 p.m.).
