Hannibal, MO - The Hannibal-LaGrange College Art Department will be holding a special art
exhibit featuring the photography of John Deckert, HLG alum, in Hagerman Art Gallery February 12 – March 12.
Deckert attended HLG from 1998-2003, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Art. Deckert's focus was in acrylic painting. He also spent some time studying photography, along with sculpture and drawing. After graduating, Deckert moved to Springfield, MO, where he spent some time as a photography assistant for a commercial photographer and learned many techniques of the trade, assisting in the photographing of sports cars, food, and architecture. Deckert married in the summer of 2005 and moved back to South Dakota to help with the family farm. He and his wife Dena have three daughters, Apphia, Amara, and Sonia. Deckert spends the winter months working on his art.
Deckert’s art show will focus on acrylic paintings, which he describes as being “bright and vivid with much texture.” He will also feature some photography, including shots taken while in Alaska as well as a number of photographs of Major League Baseball players in action. Deckert admits to not having a clear cut style but is consistent in his intention of portraying a particular feeling and story, and says one artist that has influenced him the most is Vincent Van Gogh.
An opening reception for Deckert’s exhibit will be held on Friday, February 12, from 6:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. For more information, contact Robin Stone, art department chair, at (573) 221-3675, ext. 3175.
