Music Department to Hold Annual Jazz Supper

Hannibal, MO – Tuesday, February 16, 2010, in the Hannibal-Lagrange College Cafeteria (located in the Partee Center) the HLG Department of Music and Pioneer College Caterers invites the public to attend the annual HLG Jazz Supper. The HLG Blues Band, Jazz Choir, and Jazz Band will begin performing at 5:00 p.m. The price of admission is $6.00 for the southern meal and musical entertainment.

The HLG Blues Band, which in the past has had predominantly student members, is made up of faculty, staff and alumni. Some of the members are Michelle Todd (drums), Matt Assel (piano), Michael Chlebanowski and Jake King (guitars), John Booth (bass), and Sara Keck (vocals).

Some of the selections will be “Lie to Me” and “Leaving to Stay” (Johnny Lang), “Born in Louisiana” (Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown) and “You Don’t Know Baby” (Peggy Lee). Michael Chlebanowski will solo on “Stormy Monday” a T-Bone Walker tune covered by the Allman Brothers.  There will also be a blues improvisatory instrumental section. Dr. John Booth is the director of the blues band.

The 24 member jazz choir will be singing vocal jazz favorites such as “Ain’t Misbehavin,” by Thomas “Fats” Waller, “I Got Rhythm,” by George and Ira Gershwin, and “Pick Up the Pieces,” by Ball, Duncan, Gorrie, Stuart, McIntosh and McIntyre.  Also featured will be several other jazz types including “Moonglow” by Hudson, DeLang and Mills, “Embraceable You” by George and Ira Gershwin, and “I Can’t Believe that You’re in Love with Me,” featuring soloists Michaela McClendon and Marshall Guthrie. The men of the Jazz Choir will also perform a doo op favorite “Silhouettes” by Slay Jr. and Crewe.  The HLG Jazz Choir performs for public schools and civic functions throughout the school year. The HLG Jazz Band this semester consists of Ben Albee, Alicia Ames, Matt Assel, Austin Birkhead, Danielle Dawson, Ben Gibson, Valerie Houke, Katie Goldstein, Gustavo Martins, Lacee O’Brien, Rebecca Penner, Krystal Weigum, and Jessica Woodworth.  Selections at the Jazz Supper will include “Fat Cat,” “Sweet Georgia Brown,” “Fox Run,” Louie, Louie,” “Country Mile,” “Tell Me the Story of Jesus,” “Old Time Rock and Roll,” and “Count Me In.” The director of the Jazz Band is Dave Corkern.
