Records Fall at the AMC Indoor Championships

Columbia, MO – Several school records were broken Friday as the HLGU Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field teams participated in the American Midwest Conference Indoor Championships.
Five new school records were set by the women to help them to a second place finish behind McKendree University. Cailey Wilkinson was the AMC champion in the 60 meter hurdles as she broke the HLGU record with a time of 10.24 seconds. Breanna Newton and Sarah Wilson were also honored as conference champions as Newton finished the mile in a school record time of 5:22.76 and Wilson broke the school record in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:00.44. Wilson also broke the school record in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.97 seconds to finish second amongst AMC runners. Nicole Griesbaum finished the 5000 meter run in second to gain eight points for the Lady Trojans. Her time of 20:01.09 broke the old school record in the 5000 meter run.
The women also had several athletes named to the All-AMC team. Wilkinson, Wilson, Newton, Griesbaum, Jasman Edmond, Mandi Riddle, Carissa Eichmeyer, Cara Grinde, Holland McCoy, and Abbie Herrold were all honored as all-conference athletes.
The men’s squad also broke a few school records Friday as it finished fourth in the AMC standings. Andre Townsend continued to show off his speed as he laid claim to the 200 meter dash. Townsend not only was named the AMC champion in the event but also broke the school record in the process with a time of 22.57 seconds. Philiph Tonui gained eight points for the Trojans as he finished the 1000 meter run in a school record time of 2:39.47. Michael Clemons also performed well at the conference meet as he broke the HLGU record in the Triple Jump with a leap of 12.05 meters.
Being named to the all-conference team for the men were Townsend, Tonui, Edward Gregg, Zach Lewis, Ryan Brontz, Nathan Uding, Tyler Malone, Brett Jones, and Easton Padden.
Five Trojans will now travel to Geneva, OH to participate in the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships on March 3-5. Newton (1000 meters), Eichmeyer (3000 meter race walk), Tonui (5000 meters), Townsend (60 meter hurdles), and Patton (pole vault) will all represent HLGU at nationals.
