Hannibal, MO - The Trojan golf teams held its HLGU Spring Invite this past Monday and Tuesday at Norwood’s Golf Course.  Over 60 golfers occupied the course as the invite included four women’s and seven men’s teams.

The Lady Trojans finished day one on top of the standings with a team score of 386 while Central Methodist lingered close behind with a team score of 396.  However, the Lady Trojans were able to pull away in day two of the competition as it finished 24 strokes lower than day one with a score of 362.  The team’s round two surge helped solidify its first place finish as the women ended the invite with a total team score of 748.

Leading the way for the Lady Trojans on the par 72 course was freshman Alicia Andres.  Andres finished day one tied for third with a score of 93 (+21).  Her second round performance was much improved as she finished the day shooting an 86 (+14) and ended the invite sitting tied for second place overall.  Fellow freshman Brittany Ernst finished with a fourth place finish overall after shooting an 88 (+16) and leading the competition after day one.  Ernst couldn’t match her round one score on Tuesday as she shot a 92 (+20) to end the invite just one stroke behind second and two behind first.

Freshman Lily Braungardt struggled in the first round as she came in the club house after shooting a 103 (+31) but climbed the leader board on Tuesday with a 19 stroke improvement to finish the day with an 84 (+12) and the invite in fifth.  Sophomore teammate Michaela McClendon finished the invite in ninth place giving the ladies four top-ten finishes on its home course.  McClendon shot a 102 (+30) on day one and improve her play by two strokes on day two with a 100 (+28).

“I was very proud of how the team played this week,” stated Coach Michael Brookshire.  “We shot our lowest total of the year and had our lowest round of the year as well at 362.  We have such a young team, and to see them come out and fight to turn in low rounds is very encouraging.”

The men’s team found itself in a tough competition with Evangel, William Woods, and Missouri Baptist after Monday’s round came to a close.  The Trojans sat on top of the standings with a team score of 297 after the first round with only 10 strokes separating it from fourth place.  Both William Woods and Missouri Baptist struggled in its second round while HLGU and Evangel rose to the challenge as both schools improved its scores from Monday’s round.  Evangel made a strong push for first but couldn’t make up the deficit from round one as it finished in second just four strokes behind the Trojans who shot a 296 on Tuesday to finish the invite on top of the standings with a team score of 593.

After day one on the par 72 course, Trojan freshman Philippe Guidi found himself tied for first after shooting a 72 (par).  Guidi improved on his first round performance as he finished Tuesday’s round with a 71 (-1) to end the invite on top of the leader board with the only score under par.  Sophomore teammate Lucas Morande also had two solid rounds as he shot a 73 (+1) on day one and a 74 (+2) on day two giving him a tie for third place overall.  Freshman Marco Torrente finished the invite tied for eighth place with scores of 73 (+1) and 78 (+6) while freshman teammate Matthew Brennan finished in a tie for 20th after shooting a 79 (+7) and a 74 (+2).

“The guys played really well this week, turning in our low total (593) and low round of the year (296),” said Coach Brookshire.  “It was a team effort with everyone contributing.  Philippe came out and shot -1 for the tournament, which is a great score.  I am hoping to carry this momentum into the conference tournament next week.  This was the first win over William Woods as well since I have been here and a solid win over two teams who are receiving votes (Woods, Evangel) in the NAIA poll.”

The Lady Trojans will now travel to Alton, IL to participate in the American Midwest Conference Tournament this Friday and Saturday while the men will wait until April 29 and 30 to play in the American Midwest Conference Tournament held in Sioux City, IA.
