St. Louis, MO – The Trojan Baseball team has been making an upset run through the American Midwest Conference Tournament as it defeated No. 4 seed Park University and No. 1 seed Missouri Baptist University in the double elimination tournament.
It took extra innings for the No. 5 seed Trojans to take down Park on Friday morning. HLGU quickly fell behind as the Pirates took a 4-0 lead after scoring two in the second inning and single runs in the third and fourth. The Trojans came back with a four run seventh inning to tie the game at four. However, neither team could produce runs in the eighth or ninth and the game was sent into extra innings. It took until the 12th inning before either team could bring a run in as the Trojans brought the winning run across in walk-off fashion to take the opening game 5-4.
Zach Bedsworth started on the mound for the Trojans as he lasted six innings before the Trojans called for help from the bullpen. Both RJ Bachtold and Derek Allen pitched a little over one inning each before Gabe Marshall was called to the mound. Marshall finished the final three innings for the Trojans and took the win to improve his record to 3-5. With the win the Trojans moved on in the winner’s bracket to face the top seeded Missouri Baptist Spartans.
The Trojans were forced to come from behind again in its second game in the conference tournament. Missouri Baptist got out to an early lead as it brought a run across in the second inning. However, the lone run was all the Spartans could produce as Trojan pitcher Jacob Genz threw a gem to help the Trojans upend the Spartans. Genz (2-3) went the distance while only giving up one run on two hits and reaching double-digits in strikeouts with 10.
The Trojan’s offense rallied around Genz’s performance as it scored two in the sixth to give HLGU the lead. Genz and the Trojan defense held off the Spartans for the next three innings keeping Missouri Baptist off the scoreboard to claim game its second game of the tournament with a 2-1 upset. Once again, the win allowed the Trojans to advance on in the winner’s bracket to face No. 2 seed William Woods.
After a busy and long Friday, the Trojans faced the Eagles of Williams Woods in a Saturday afternoon contest for the right to move on to the conference championship game.
Marshall took the start for the Trojans but was only able to last 5.1 innings as he gave up seven earned runs on four hits while striking out seven. Bachtold replaced Marshall as he held the Eagles scoreless for the next 3.2 innings.
The Trojan offense was hot early as it scored seven runs in the first five innings. But, HLGU was held scoreless from the sixth on as it once again was forced into extra innings. After a scoreless 10th, William Woods brought three runs across in the 11th to take the lead and the win. Eagle pitcher Alex Cann (5-0) shut down the Trojans from the ninth inning on to earn the win and help send the Eagles on into the championship game.
With the loss, the Trojans are forced into a rematch against Missouri Baptist in an elimination game on Monday at noon. If the Trojans can defeat the Spartans, it will advance into the championship game against William Woods. However, if the Trojans make the championship, it will have to defeat the Eagles twice to claim the conference crown.
