The thing I love most about our music department is the personable feeling you get from the faculty. They actually care about you and it goes beyond the classroom. Not only are they great teachers, they are world-class musicians!Steven Hodge '18 Worship Music
Our music department finds its strength in a tight-knit, professional environment where students are equipped with the key fundamentals and Christian worldview they need to succeed after graduation. All music students have an opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities and ensembles during their HLGU career.
The low faculty-to-student ratio aids in the personal attention music department students receive. We know our students by name and our music students also have a strong camaraderie with one another.
The department’s faculty have a high level of involvement in local churches, performing groups, and community, state, and national organizations. These experiences bring a depth of perception to their teaching roles.
For students interested in performing, HLGU offers a variety of options. Choose from chapel worship band, concert choir, symphonic band with strings, or one of our ministry teams, Praise Song, Chamber Choir, or The New Edition (Christian theatre troupe).
HLGU’s Music Department offers a variety of assistantships with faculty members and internships with local churches and schools. Our graduates have the knowledge to teach in private or public school systems, lead worship in churches, or teach privately. The music program at HLGU is also an excellent foundation for pursuing a higher academic degree.

HLGU offers a bachelor of music degree with concentrations in instrumental performance and vocal performance. In addition to this major, the education division also offers K-12 certification in instrumental and vocal music.
Many of our students enjoy being a member of NAfME (National Association for Music Education).
Working with our theatre department, students have the opportunity to perform on stage or participate in the orchestra for musical theatre productions.
A Bachelor of Secondary Education with a music certification equips graduates to teach in private or public school settings.
A combination of classroom work and practical experience during their HLG career prepares graduates to fill a variety of music-related positions in local churches.
