SUMMARY:Poverty\, Inc. Screening
DESCRIPTION:Hannibal-LaGrange University will be screening the award-winning documentary Poverty\, Inc. on Monday\, February 26\, at 7 pm in the Roland Fine Arts Center. Michael Matheson Miller\, the director and producer will introduce the film and field questions after its conclusion. \nView Trailer \nOn Tuesday\, February 27\, Miller will give a lecture on issues raised in the film at 7 pm in the L.A. Foster Student Center. Both the movie and lecture are free\, family-friendly\, and open to the public. \nPoverty\, Inc. is a thought-provoking film that challenges views on charitable giving\, particularly in third-world countries.  Drawing from over 200 interviews and filmed in 20 countries\, Poverty\, Inc. unearths an uncomfortable side of charity and foreign aid that can no longer be ignored. From shoes to international adoptions\, solar panels to agriculture subsidies\, the film challenges its viewers to ask the tough question\, “Could I be part of the problem?” \nPrevious viewers have described the documentary as “eye-opening.”  Miles Mullin\, vice president of academic administration at HLGU says\, “For those who truly have a heart to help impoverished people around the world\, Poverty\, Inc. will change the way you approach that challenge.” \nIn addition to being the director and producer of Poverty\, Inc.\, Miller is a research fellow at the Acton Institute\, a think tank focused on the intersection between market economics and moral philosophy and theology.  Miller writes and speaks extensively on issues of development\, political economy\, religion\, and culture. He previously taught philosophy and political science at Ave Maria College in Nicaragua and was the chair of the philosophy and theology department.  His lecture on February 27 will focus on the relationship between crony capitalism\, cycles of dependency\, and foreign aid. \nMiller holds graduate degrees in philosophy\, international development\, and international business. He has lived and traveled in Europe\, Asia\, Africa\, and Latin America. He has been featured on FOX Business\, CNBC\, Russ Roberts\, and numerous radio shows. He has been published in The New York Post\, The Washington Times\, The LA Daily News\, The Detroit News\, and Real Clear Politics. \nThis educational and enlightening event is sponsored by a grant from the Charles Koch Foundation. For more information about the event\, contact Rebecca Sneed\, institutional advancement and public relations assistant at 573-629-3118\, or via email at rebecca.sneed@hlg.edu.

SUMMARY:Arbor Day Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Hannibal-LaGrange University will hold an Arbor Day celebration on Friday\, April 6 at 10 am to plant a tree and celebrate being a Tree Campus USA®. \nTree Campus USA is a national program created in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation to honor colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and to engage staff and students in conservation goals. Hannibal-LaGrange University achieved the title by meeting Tree Campus USA’s five standards\, which include maintaining a tree advisory committee\, a campus tree-care plan\, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program\, an Arbor Day observance and student service-learning project. Currently there are 254 campus across the United States with this recognition. \nThis year’s Arbor Day ceremony will also include a reading of an Arbor Day Proclamation. This proclamation will be read every year on Arbor Day as part of HLGU’s application to remain a Tree Campus USA. In addition\, Dr. Allen\, along with Betty Anderson and a representative from the Hannibal Tree Board\, will speak at the ceremony. \nFor more information on the Arbor Day Celebration\, or on how to become a supporter of HLGU’s tree campaign\, contact Betty Anderson at 573-629-3093\, or via email at banderson@hlg.edu.

SUMMARY:Leadership and The Church Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Leadership and The Church is a church administration seminar being held on Saturday\, September 22 at Hannibal-LaGrange University for local church leaders. In a world facing a new church scandal almost daily\, there has never been a better time to increase awareness and knowledge in this crucial area of church administration. Pastors\, elders\, treasurers\, staff members\, and volunteer leaders are invited to learn about three issues facing churches today: security\, safety\, and stability. \nThis seminar seeks to educate\, equip\, and encourage church leaders. With three experienced speakers\, church leaders will be taught on church administration topics so they can strengthen and advance the mission of the Church. The speakers this year are: Dr. Neil Franks\, President & Treasurer of the Missouri Baptist Foundation\, Dr. Glenn A. Miller\, founder & CEO of Miller Management\, and Vaughn Baker\, President of Strategos International. \nPast participants of this seminar have given positive reviews\, saying\, “Great seminar and great knowledgeable speakers\,” and “I thought this year’s array was spot-on! This was just very well done.” Miller Management\, a nonprofit accounting firm\, has been providing administrative training to churches since 2003. \nHannibal-LaGrange University\, located at 2800 Palmyra Road\, Hannibal\, Missouri 63401\, will host the event. Registration begins at 8:00 am. Continental breakfast will be available. The speakers will present from 8:30 am to noon. From noon to 1:00 pm there will be lunch and a panel discussion with the speakers and presenting partners. \nTo register for this event\, visit www.leadershipandthechurch.com. The cost is $25 per church and allows for up to three attendees from each church. \n  \nMiller Management is a public accounting firm that exclusively serves churches and nonprofits. SUMMARY:Trojan Trek - Canceled
DESCRIPTION:Sorry to inform you\, the Trojan Trek will be canceled for October 27th 2018. We will resume the race on Homecoming 2019. Again sorry for the inconvenience.\nHLGU’s annual Trojan Trek will be held on Saturday\, October 27. Sponsored by HLGU’s Cross Country and Track & Field teams\, the 5k Run/Walk begins at 9 am at the Roland Fine Arts Center. \nThe Trojan Trek course will differ from past years. This year\, the trek will be a grass course that weaves through HLGU’s picturesque front lawn. \nPlaques will be given to the overall male and female\, overall male and female HLGU alumni\, and overall male and female in the masters division\, aged 40+. Additionally\, the top two runners in each age group will receive medals. \nProceeds from the event will help offset student expenses for the cross country and track and field teams. \nThe HLGU Cross Country and Track & Field teams are comprised of 41 athletes. During the 2017-18 school year\, the teams brought home 34 all-conference performances. In 2017\, for cross country\, the Trojans produced two national qualifiers\, Bailey Wagner and Lauren Sisco\, and had five ladies under 21 minutes for the first time in the team’s 15 year history. \nDuring indoor track season the men’s track team placed third in conference\, making the team all-conference. In the 2018 outdoor track season the men’s team placed second in conference\, making the team all-conference. The team also set four new school records in the 4×100\, 4×400\, shot put\, and hammer throw. The Lady Trojans also broke the school record in the 4×100. \nThis athletic program produces more than champions though. The combined GPA for cross country athletes is 3.28 and for track and field is 3.37. \nThe cost to register is $25\, $15 for HLGU alumni\, students\, faculty\, and staff\, or $75 for families of five. All those registered before October 12\, are guaranteed a t-shirt. On and after October 12\, the registration fee increases to $30. \nFor more information regarding the Trojan Trek\, email trojantrek@hlg.edu.
