SUMMARY:Suicide Awareness & Prevention Sessions with Kevin Hines
DESCRIPTION:Kevin Hines is a mental health advocate\, global speaker\, best-selling author\, documentary filmmaker and entrepreneur who reaches audiences around the world with his story of an unlikely survival and his strong will to live. \nTwo years after Hines was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age 19\, he attempted to take his own life by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge. Hines is one of only 34 — less than one percent — to survive the fall\, and he is the only Golden Gate Bridge jump survivor who is actively spreading his message around the globe about living mentally healthy. \nEvent coordinators are tri-state residents\, Amanda Hays and Jessica Baker\, who are committed to providing insight and assistance about suicide awareness and prevention. Hays was diagnosed with severe postpartum depression which led her to plan her own suicide. She went through treatment and therapy to overcome those struggles. \nHays’ goal is to use her story to help others in the area with similar suicide tendencies. “I don’t think there’s any person anywhere that isn’t somehow effected by mental health or suicide. We have to realize these are life and death situations\,” Hays said. Jessica Baker with Preferred Family Healthcare said she hopes this event helps people in the community ask for help when they need it. \nKevin Hines shares his story of hope and celebration of life Monday\, October 28\, in the Roland Fine Arts Center on the campus of Hannibal-LaGrange University\, 2800 Palmyra Road\, Hannibal. \nThere are three free sessions: \n\n9am – Noon\n1:30pm – 4:30pm (this session is full/registration is closed)\n6 – 9pm\n\nSeating is limited. Register at https://jbaker2019.wufoo.com/forms/z1y7h8ky1s2rvmg/ \nVisit www.kevinhinesstory.com/ for more information about Kevin. \n  \nContact: \nJessica Baker \n217-242-7449

SUMMARY:Theatre Production - You Can't Take It with You
DESCRIPTION:The Hannibal-LaGrange University Theatre Department will be presenting three performances of the Hart and Kaufman comedy You Can’t Take It with You November 14-16 in the Parker Theatre of the Roland Fine Arts Center. \nYou Can’t Take It with You is a charming comedy centered around the Vanderhof family. This heartfelt tale is sure to bring joy and laughter to all audiences. \nTickets are $9 in advance and $10 at the door. Admission for seniors 60+ is $8 in advance and at the door. For groups of 10 or more\, admission is $8 per ticket. For more information\, or to reserve tickets\, please call the theatre box office at 573-629-3182.

SUMMARY:Arbor Day Honoring Dr. Gerald (Jerry) Burkett
DESCRIPTION:Hannibal-LaGrange University will hold an Arbor Day celebration on Friday\, October 2\, at 10 am outside the Carroll Science Center to celebrate being named a Tree Campus USA® institution for 2019\, the seventh year in a row that HLGU has earned this designation. \nThe University will also honor Dr. Gerald (Jerry) Burkett’s memory by planting additional trees and installing permanent benches. Dr. Burkett taught for 31 years in the science department at HLGU. \n“Jerry and his wife Mary spent their careers in service to the Lord and to Hannibal-LaGrange University\,” said Dr. Anthony Allen\, HLGU President. “We are pleased to celebrate Jerry’s life and honor his memory. He was loved and appreciated by all and was well-liked by students. We celebrate being a Tree Campus USA institution and plant these trees and install these benches in memory of Dr. Jerry Burkett.” \nTree Campus USA® is a national program created in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation to honor colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and to engage staff and students in conservation goals. Hannibal-LaGrange University achieved the title by meeting Tree Campus USA’s rigid standards including student service-learning projects. \n“Students are eager to volunteer in their communities and become better stewards of the environment\,” said Matt Harris\, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Participating in Tree Campus USA sets a fine example for other colleges and universities\, while helping to create a healthier planet for us all.” \nFor more information on the Arbor Day Celebration\, or on how to become a supporter of HLGU’s tree campaign\, contact Dr. Ray Carty at 573-629-3094\, or via email at rcarty@hlg.edu\, or give online at hlg.edu/giving.

SUMMARY:Theatre Production - Riders to the Sea
DESCRIPTION:October 8-10\, Show times at 6:30 pm and 8 pm \nAll performances will be held in the Parker Theatre. This fall we are limiting our audience to 50 per performance. \nCost for each performances is $5 per person. Faculty\, Staff and students receive one free ticket. Call the box office at 573-629-3182 to make a reservation and pay at the door – cash or check only. We will not offer online ticket sales for the one acts and audience members. Running time for these productions will range from 40- 60 minutes with no intermission. \nRiders to the Sea is a play written by Irish Literary Renaissance playwright John Millington Synge. It was first performed on 25 February 1904 at the Molesworth Hall\, Dublin\, by the Irish National Theater Society with Helen Laird playing Maurya. A one-act tragedy\, the play is set in the Aran Islands\, Inishmaan\, and like all of Synge’s plays it is noted for capturing the poetic dialogue of rural Ireland. The plot is based not on the traditional conflict of human wills but on the hopeless struggle of a people against the impersonal but relentless cruelty of the sea. \nBackground – In 1897\, J. M. Synge was encouraged by his friend and colleague William Butler Yeats to visit the Aran Islands. He went on to spend the summers from 1898 to 1903 there. While on the Aran island of Inishmaan\, Synge heard the story of a man from Inishmaan whose body washed up on the shore of an island of County Donegal\, which inspired Riders to the Sea. \nRiders to the Sea is written in the Hiberno-English dialect of the Aran Islands. Synge’s use of the native Irish language is part of the Irish Literary Revival\, a period when Irish literature looked to encourage pride and nationalism in Ireland.
