SUMMARY:Theatre Production - Riders to the Sea
DESCRIPTION:October 8-10\, Show times at 6:30 pm and 8 pm \nAll performances will be held in the Parker Theatre. This fall we are limiting our audience to 50 per performance. \nCost for each performances is $5 per person. Faculty\, Staff and students receive one free ticket. Call the box office at 573-629-3182 to make a reservation and pay at the door – cash or check only. We will not offer online ticket sales for the one acts and audience members. Running time for these productions will range from 40- 60 minutes with no intermission. \nRiders to the Sea is a play written by Irish Literary Renaissance playwright John Millington Synge. It was first performed on 25 February 1904 at the Molesworth Hall\, Dublin\, by the Irish National Theater Society with Helen Laird playing Maurya. A one-act tragedy\, the play is set in the Aran Islands\, Inishmaan\, and like all of Synge’s plays it is noted for capturing the poetic dialogue of rural Ireland. The plot is based not on the traditional conflict of human wills but on the hopeless struggle of a people against the impersonal but relentless cruelty of the sea. \nBackground – In 1897\, J. M. Synge was encouraged by his friend and colleague William Butler Yeats to visit the Aran Islands. He went on to spend the summers from 1898 to 1903 there. While on the Aran island of Inishmaan\, Synge heard the story of a man from Inishmaan whose body washed up on the shore of an island of County Donegal\, which inspired Riders to the Sea. \nRiders to the Sea is written in the Hiberno-English dialect of the Aran Islands. Synge’s use of the native Irish language is part of the Irish Literary Revival\, a period when Irish literature looked to encourage pride and nationalism in Ireland.

SUMMARY:2022 HLGU Phonathon
DESCRIPTION:HLGU alumni and friends will soon be receiving phone calls from current HLGU students\, alumni\, faculty\, staff\, and friends. \nThe 2022 HLGU Phonathon will be taking place on select nights between April 11 and April 21 from the institutional advancement office on the 4th floor of the Burt Administration building. Calling will take place between 5:30 and 7:30 pm on April 11-14 and 18-21. Callers will be reaching out to both HLGU alumni and previous donors to the institution.\n \nThis year’s Phonathon needs volunteers who love HLGU and would like to help make a difference in the lives of HLGU students. All volunteers will be provided with a script and phones for the event\, as well as some snacks. Anyone interested in volunteering for the 2022 Phonathon should email Director of Alumni Services Lauren Youse at lauren.youse@hlg.edu. \nCallers for the HLGU Phonathon will be focusing on four main areas of need for the University: \n\nImmediate debt reduction\nStudent aid and scholarships\nFaculty retention\nOperating expenses\n\n“The greatest impact we can make in this day is to raise up this next generation of students\, equip them with the knowledge of a Christian worldview\, and set them loose to serve the world wherever God should place them\,” said HLGU transitional president Dr. Rodney Harrison. “In such a time as this\, the need for friends to financially support HLGU is critical.” \nAnyone who would like to give to HLGU can do so online at hlg.edu/giving or call the institutional advancement office at 573-629-3124. \nFor more information about the 2022 HLGU Phonathon\, email Lauren Youse at lauren.youse@hlg.edu.
