SUMMARY:NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines Talk
DESCRIPTION:Hannibal-LaGrange University will welcome Riley Gaines as a guest speaker on January 31\, 2024 at 6:00 pm in the Roland Fine Arts Center.\n\nThe event is free and open to the public\, however tickets do need to be secured through www.hlg.edu/free-society. The tickets are free except there is a handling fee through the ticket website. For group tickets\, call 573.629.3260 or email FreeSociety@hlg.edu.\n\nThis event is part of the Free Society Speaker Series that HLGU hosts in partnership with the Moorman Foundation.\n\nRiley Gaines is a leader defending women’s single-sex spaces\, advocating for equality and fairness\, and standing up for women’s safety\, privacy\, and equal opportunities.\n\nGaines graduated from the University of Kentucky\, where she was a 12x All-American swimmer.\n\nRiley has made waves for speaking out after tying UPenn’s Lia Thomas\, a biological male swimmer on the women’s team\, at the 2022 NCAA Division 1 Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships.\n\nAfter Riley directly experienced competing against a man in women’s sports\, being forced without warning or consent to undress before the fully intact male\, and subjected to discrimination by the NCAA\, she became one of the most powerful voices to speak out against the injustice\, challenging the rules of the NCAA\, USA Swimming\, International Olympic Committee (IOC)\, and other governing bodies.\n\nRiley now works for the leading women’s organization making real and lasting change\, legally defining ‘woman\,’ protecting Title IX\, and defending women’s rights to single-sex spaces and equal opportunities. She has traveled the country speaking and has testified before the U.S. Senate\, U.S. House\, and countless state legislatures.\n\n“HLGU is grateful and excited for the opportunity to host Riley Gaines on campus as part of our Free Society Speaker Series. Her commitment and quest to save women’s sports from the growing threat of individuals and entities within our culture who are determined to deconstruct gender is admirable.” says Dr. Eric Turner\, Christian Studies Division Chair at HLGU.\n\nGaines currently works for the Riley Gaines Foundation through the Leadership Institute which empowers and equips individuals to stand up for what is right. Gaines also speaks on laws concerning Title IX to keep biological women in women’s sports. She has given her testimony before the U.S. Senate\, U.S. House\, and multiple state legislatures.\n\n“We believe that her cause is shared and accentuated by HLGU’s core value of promoting a biblical worldview. For us\, this event is an honor to host but also an important one for communicating and contributing our voice to this critical cause.” says Turner.\n\nFor more information about this event and the Free Society Speaker Series at HLGU\, email FreeSociety@hlg.edu or call 573.629.3260.

SUMMARY:Open House for Pulliam Hall and Crouch Hall
DESCRIPTION:Hannibal-LaGrange University invites the community to step into the past and future of student living at its upcoming Open House event. On Thursday\, April 4\, from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm\, alumni\, prospective students\, families\, and community members are invited to explore the rich history of two of the university’s most iconic dormitories\, Pulliam Hall and Crouch Hall\, before they are renovated later this spring. \nDuring the open house\, visitors will have the opportunity to tour both dormitories\, guided by knowledgeable staff who will highlight key features and answer questions about the renovation. Alumni and community members will have the chance to appreciate the university’s commitment to providing exceptional residential experiences. \nHLGU is anticipating an increase in enrollment this fall and these residences are needed to accommodate new students this fall and camps this summer. \nRenovations to Crouch Hall include new HVAC\, exterior brick work\, ceiling\, carpet\, paint\, and plaster repair. Pulliam Hall’s first floor will be completely renovated including new flooring\, ceilings\, upgraded electrical\, replacement of the entry doors\, and refinishing the antique woodwork. \nThe university needs to raise $500\,000 by mid-April 2024 for these projects. HLGU has partnered with a volunteer building group\, Campers on Mission\, to provide skilled labor for this project. The group will be on campus at the end of April to complete these renovations. HLGU is responsible for providing the materials that the team will need to complete the renovation process. \n“We invite you to be a vital part of this transformative journey\,” said Dr. Ray Carty Vice President of Institutional Advancement at Hannibal-LaGrange University. “Your support can directly impact the lives of current and future students\, ensuring that they have a safe\, comfortable\, and spiritually inspiring place to call home during their time at Hannibal-LaGrange University.” \nThe Open House event will take place on Thursday\, April 4\, from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Light refreshments will be served\, and all attendees will have the chance to enter a drawing for exclusive HLGU merchandise. \nFor more information about the Open House or to learn about the “Bring Back the Legacy” renovation campaign\, please email giving@hlg.edu or call (573) 629-3124.

SUMMARY:Arbor Day Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Hannibal-LaGrange University will hold an Arbor Day Celebration on Friday\, April 19 at 2 pm near the Roland Library on HLGU’s campus. HLGU’s Arbor Day Celebration is open to the public. \nTwo alumni\, Ruth Ihrig Foreman ’49 and Dorothy Sisson ’58\, will be honored by the planting of two river birch trees on campus. These women supported Hannibal-LaGrange during their lifetime through financial gifts\, by referring students to campus\, and through prayer. They are great examples of the rich legacy of HLGU. \nAs its name suggests\, the river birch naturally grows along riverbanks. But as a landscape tree\, it can be planted almost anywhere in the U.S. The species is valued for its relatively rapid growth\, tolerance of wetness and some drought\, unique curling bark\, spreading limbs\, brilliant yellow fall color\, and relative resistance to birch borer. \nPlanting trees on HLGU’s campus has been a longtime tradition as a Tree Campus Higher Education institution. \nTree Campus Higher Education is a national program created in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation to honor colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and to engage staff and students in conservation goals. HLGU achieved this title by meeting recognition standards including student service-learning projects.
