SUMMARY:Softball Strikeout Cancer Event
DESCRIPTION:Hannibal-LaGrange University raises funds for those battling cancer. The HLGU Softball team is hosting the Strikeout Cancer Softball Game on April 12th. The double-header against Stephens College will take place at HLGU’s softball field with the first game beginning at 2:00 p.m. The money raised at the event will go to the James E. Cary Cancer Center. \n“Our team feels strongly about devastation that cancer has caused to so many people. This is our effort to make a difference in the lives of those effected\,” says HLGU Softball Coach\, Dan Hurst. \nThere will be a silent auction and a bake sale during the games along with a special balloon release ceremony. The softball team is also selling t-shirts to raise money. The honorary first pitch at each game will be thrown by two men who have battled cancer and have a strong connection to the university. HLGU Athletic Trainer\, Steve DeMent will throw the first pitch during one of the softball games. The other pitch will be thrown by Roger Nelson. Nelson is the father of HLGU faculty member\, Lonnie Nelson. \nAbout 1.7 million new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in 2018. With more than 15.5 million Americans with a history of cancer\, most people know someone that has been affected by cancer. Event coordinator\, Sierra Brown\, says that the whole campus is excited to give back to the Hannibal community. The softball team has been hosting this event for 15 years raising approximately $20\,000 during that time. In 2017\, HLGU was recognized by the Fast Pitch Coaches Association for being the top NAIA school to donate funds to their cancer event. \nIn the case of rain\, the April 12th game will be moved to a later date. \nFor more information about the Strikeout Cancer Softball Game\, contact: \nSierra Brown \n(660) 998-5195 \nsierra.brown.11@student.hlg.edu

SUMMARY:Arbor Day Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Hannibal-LaGrange University will hold an Arbor Day celebration on Friday\, April 6 at 10 am to plant a tree and celebrate being a Tree Campus USA®. \nTree Campus USA is a national program created in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation to honor colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and to engage staff and students in conservation goals. Hannibal-LaGrange University achieved the title by meeting Tree Campus USA’s five standards\, which include maintaining a tree advisory committee\, a campus tree-care plan\, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program\, an Arbor Day observance and student service-learning project. Currently there are 254 campus across the United States with this recognition. \nThis year’s Arbor Day ceremony will also include a reading of an Arbor Day Proclamation. This proclamation will be read every year on Arbor Day as part of HLGU’s application to remain a Tree Campus USA. In addition\, Dr. Allen\, along with Betty Anderson and a representative from the Hannibal Tree Board\, will speak at the ceremony. \nFor more information on the Arbor Day Celebration\, or on how to become a supporter of HLGU’s tree campaign\, contact Betty Anderson at 573-629-3093\, or via email at banderson@hlg.edu.

SUMMARY:Poverty\, Inc. Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Hannibal-LaGrange University will be screening the award-winning documentary Poverty\, Inc. on Monday\, February 26\, at 7 pm in the Roland Fine Arts Center. On Tuesday\, February 27\, Miller will give a lecture on issues raised in the film at 7 pm in the L.A. Foster Student Center. Both the movie and lecture are free\, family-friendly\, and open to the public. \nView Trailer \nPoverty\, Inc. is a thought-provoking film that challenges views on charitable giving\, particularly in third-world countries.  Drawing from over 200 interviews and filmed in 20 countries\, Poverty\, Inc. unearths an uncomfortable side of charity and foreign aid that can no longer be ignored. From shoes to international adoptions\, solar panels to agriculture subsidies\, the film challenges its viewers to ask the tough question\, “Could I be part of the problem?” \nPrevious viewers have described the documentary as “eye-opening.”  Miles Mullin\, vice president of academic administration at HLGU says\, “For those who truly have a heart to help impoverished people around the world\, Poverty\, Inc. will change the way you approach that challenge.” \nIn addition to being the director and producer of Poverty\, Inc.\, Miller is a research fellow at the Acton Institute\, a think tank focused on the intersection between market economics and moral philosophy and theology.  Miller writes and speaks extensively on issues of development\, political economy\, religion\, and culture. He previously taught philosophy and political science at Ave Maria College in Nicaragua and was the chair of the philosophy and theology department.  His lecture on February 27 will focus on the relationship between crony capitalism\, cycles of dependency\, and foreign aid. \nMiller holds graduate degrees in philosophy\, international development\, and international business. He has lived and traveled in Europe\, Asia\, Africa\, and Latin America. He has been featured on FOX Business\, CNBC\, Russ Roberts\, and numerous radio shows. He has been published in The New York Post\, The Washington Times\, The LA Daily News\, The Detroit News\, and Real Clear Politics. \nThis educational and enlightening event is sponsored by a grant from the Charles Koch Foundation. For more information about the event\, contact Rebecca Sneed\, institutional advancement and public relations assistant at 573-629-3118\, or via email at rebecca.sneed@hlg.edu.

SUMMARY:Spiritual Emphasis Days
DESCRIPTION:Hannibal-LaGrange University’s annual campus renewal\, Spiritual Emphasis Days (formerly 3 Days in September)\, will be held September 6-7\, in the Parker Theatre of the Roland Fine Arts Center at 10 am. Evangelist Tony Nolan will once again be the featured speaker. These events are free and open to the public. \nBorn to a mentally-ill prostitute and sold to an abusive adoptive father for $200\, Tony Nolan is well acquainted with the harshness of the human experience. For many years he struggled with alcohol and drugs and the belief that he was worthless. \nAfter waking up from a failed suicide attempt at the age of 24\, Nolan attended a Bible study with his stepbrother\, and his life was transformed by the gospel. \nNolan has dedicated his life to sharing the good news of God’s redeeming love. As a nationally sought-after preacher\, Nolan’s ministry has transformed the lives of thousands. He has served as the tour pastor and evangelist for the Casting Crowns Lifesong Tour and Winter Jam Tour Spectacular\, stopping in more than 220 U.S. cities and seeing 400\,000 public professions of faith. He has also preached at Christian Family Day at Busch Stadium in St. Louis\, Xtreme Conferences\, Creation Festivals\, the Southern Baptist Convention\, and more.
